Midtown Community Garden - Houston, TX.
We are working on becoming a 501(c)7 Unincorporated Nonprofit Association. Please follow the discussion board on this page for more information.
We have 25 allotments, each one measures 4ft x 20ft, where member gardeners grow whatever they wish. Although the garden is full we maintain a Waiting List to get an allotment in the garden on a first come basis. Our official ground breaking and 1st planting took place on September 1, 2010. On November 4, 2010, all 25 allotments were constructed and planted. Our fiscal calendar year is from September 1 through August 31.

Members Annual Meeting this weekend to celebrate Year One...Hooray!
You're right, Larry. I was in the Garden around 6:30am this morning, and the heron was hanging by the pond, catching a meal. It's a Yellow-crowned Night Heron, aka American Night Heron, aka squawk http://www.facebook.com/pages/Yellow-crowned-Night-Heron/131954040173928

Community Garden Program
I knew the City of Houston was involved in some fashion with Community Gardens, but didn't know there were 11 of them affiliated with the Houston Department of Health and Human Services (HDHHS). There are links to all 11 Gardens at this link: http://www.houstontx.gov/health/Community/garden.html

First (night) harvest from the Squash Patch. (Much) more to come.
The 1st round of corn is being passed out! Members, contact Marji for your share!
Yikes! I should have read this before ....!! Calabasa squash can produce up until frost! And the whole fruits can be stored for a month or more in a cool, dry area. I think I better harvest a few now and put them in the fridge until the Meeting! Anyone have an empty fridge that works? Ours are full!
Marji? You back in town yet? We need to talk corn! We may need to cut and distribute the corn before the Members Meeting on June 18, but I think we'll be able to pass out the squash at the Meeting. And then I'm going to rip it up! The Squash Patch, that is.
Water usage over the last week (5/23-5/29) was 501 gallons/day. Very, very high. Please remember to water your plot for no more than five minutes per day, and even that is probably much more than you really would need.
Another reminder to Members. My battery-powered trimmer is available to any and all Members for work inside the Garden. Just contact me and I'll get it to you. I keep six batteries fully charged, and each battery will last 10-20 minutes, depending upon how tough the weeds are. 10-20 minutes may not sound like much, but it's really plenty of time to do one or two plots, easy.
Trimmed around the Corn Patch and plot #'s 5, 14, 15, 24 & 25 this evening. Tomorrow evening I'll see if I can do the rest. The only time it's possible is about an hour or less before the sun goes down. This heat and humidity just takes it out of me.
