During , our main focus is educating diverse communities across Texas about the impact of organ, eye and tissue donation. At a recent health fair hosted by the Grand Prairie Spanish South Seventh-Day Adventist Church, we did just that.

Nearly 150 attendees were inspired by our Ambassadors of Hope, William S. and Chandra M., who shared facts and addressed misconceptions about donation, encouraging others to register.

A special shoutout goes to Sebastian A., a church volunteer who stepped in as LifeGift's Spanish Interpreter at the event. We can't wait to see you again, Grand Prairie!

"Breathe Easy" - that's the phrase you'll see written on Team Mike Anthony's t-shirts during Houston's 2nd Chance Run. 💙💚 Their donor hero, Micheal Anthony Oviedo, is the reason they run.

In 2019, Micheal suffered a severe asthma attack at 21 years old. His mother, Lori Rojas, says becoming a registered donor was a decision Michael made at just 15 years old when he obtained his driver’s license.

Micheal saved the lives of four people through the selfless giving of his heart, liver, pancreas and both kidneys, restored sight to one individual through cornea donation and healed countless others through tissue donation.

"Mike left his mark in this world by showing everyone that it’s okay to help and it’s okay to donate. Know that our loved ones did not leave us in vain; they have a greater purpose and are not only heroes but legends who will live on," shares Rojas.

If you're participating in Houston's 2nd Chance Run, be sure to meet Team Mike Anthony! Remember, you still have time to create your own team and honor your donor hero. To do so, visit here >>> https://ow.ly/2ktl50T6Nak

Barbara VerWey, one of LifeGift’s Community Engagement Specialists, has been setting our west region on fire! 🔥

She’s getting the community involved in tons of activities and attending numerous events to help further the mission of organ, eye and tissue donation. If you see her out and about educating and inspiring the community in Amarillo or Lubbock, be sure to say “Hi!”

Thanks for all you do, Barbara! 💙💚

We appreciate Barbara VerWey for her presence today and for enlightening us about LifeGift. She cleared up some misconceptions and provided the facts regarding organ donation. Her presentation was followed with a great question and answer session.

Currently, over 100,000 individuals, including men, women, and children, are on the waiting list for vital transplants.
* In Texas alone, 10,000 people are waiting, yet only 60% of Texans have registered as donors.
* Nearly 90% of those on the waiting list require a kidney, and living donors are a viable option for these individuals.
* Registering to become a donor is easy and quick at www.donatelifetexas.org.

LifeGift’s vice president and chief medical officer, Yolanda Becker, MD, FACS, FAST and community engagement specialist Leslie Meigs-Torres, highlighted LifeGift’s organ and tissue donation programs. Dr. Becker addressed popular myths and misconceptions about organ donation, while Meigs-Torres shared details about her personal kidney transplantation journey.

LifeGift’s Ambassador of Hope volunteers Monica Emerson, John Sanson and Manuel Calderon shared their personal stories and answered questions about LifeGift’s Ambassador of Hope volunteer program.

“LifeGift is committed to community outreach by supporting initiatives that make a tangible difference in the lives of young people,” says Dr. Becker. “By investing in the future of healthcare, we’re helping to cultivate a diverse and talented pool of future nurses who will contribute to the strength and resilience of our healthcare system.”

“It was a great opportunity to collaborate with LifeGift and introduce students to the world of organ transplantation,” shares Renée Omoyeni, MS, BSN, RN, CompassRN founder and executive director. “Our objective is to provide aspiring healthcare professionals with early exposure to various nursing specialties and roles.
