Happy National Nurses Day! Today and every day, we're celebrating our incredible nurses for their dedication to caring for our patients. Healthcare, at its core, is about people wanting to help others, and no one exemplifies that purpose more so than our nurses. We appreciate all you do!

Prior to his illness, Benjamin led a vibrant life full of activities. However, a sudden health crisis necessitated his admission to a local hospital in Houston, where he relied on a ventilator for over four weeks. Following this challenging period, Benjamin was transferred to Kindred Hospital Houston Medical Center for specialized care that includes ventilator weaning and extensive rehabilitation.

Upon admission at Kindred, a dedicated care team collaborated to devise a comprehensive care plan tailored to Benjamin's needs. Recognizing the vital role of rehabilitation in his recovery journey, the team integrated a multifaceted approach encompassing physical, occupational, and speech therapies alongside ventilator management.

Central to their efforts was the goal of weaning Benjamin off the ventilator to facilitate his recovery. With unwavering determination and the guidance of his caregivers, Benjamin diligently engaged in respiratory therapy, employing targeted exercises to strengthen his lungs. Simultaneously, the rehabilitation team focused on restoring his physical function and mobility through personalized exercise regimens and mobility training.

After several weeks of perseverance, Benjamin achieved a significant milestone: he successfully transitioned to breathing without the aid of the ventilator. Subsequently, he underwent speech therapy to address communication challenges stemming from his prolonged use of the machine. Through consistent effort and rehabilitation, Benjamin gradually regained his mobility, progressing from bedridden to ambulating with assistance.

With each passing day, Benjamin's resilience and dedication to his rehabilitation regimen became increasingly evident. His progress surpassed expectations as he surpassed all the goals set in his care plan. As he prepares for discharge to a lower level of care, Benjamin carries with him not only physical improvements but also newfound confidence and hope for the future.

Battling deep-seated prejudice against women and Black Americans in medicine, Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, became the first Black woman to earn a medical degree in the United States in 1864. After graduating from the New England Female Medical College, she treated Civil War refugees before becoming the first Black person to publish a medical book, focusing on best practices for good health for women and children. This Black History Month, we applaud Rebecca’s pioneering achievements.

After suffering a major stroke, Seandale was transferred to our hospital where he could receive ongoing medical care, respiratory therapy, wound care and rehabilitation. Seandale is one of many stroke victims who come to our hospitals every day in need of the knowledge, care and compassion we provide to help return them to a normal life. When you think of Stroke Awareness, think of Seandale, who with our help, has progressed toward a full recovery.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is an annual celebration that recognizes the historical and cultural contributions of individuals and groups of Asian and Pacific Islander descent to the United States. We are thankful for those individuals who have dedicated their lives to the healthcare field and those who have enriched our collective culture through the arts, government, the sciences and more.

While women's health is a top priority 365 days a year, Women’s Health Month gives us the opportunity to raise awareness for and bring focus to key aspects of women's health. This includes the importance of screenings for breast cancer and heart disease, as well as mental health checkups for anxiety and depression.

Knowledge is power, and when women know and understand more about their mental and physical health they are better equipped to take on the obstacles that can come their way.
