Master of Energy Transition and Sustainability (METS) 04/15/2024

We're thrilled to announce the launch of our new degree program: the Master of Energy Transition and Sustainability (METS). Developed jointly by the George R. Brown School of Engineering and the Wiess School of Natural Sciences, METS presents an opportunity for recent college graduates with a background in science or engineering, as well as professionals in the energy sector at any stage of their career, to position themselves as leaders and experts in the realm of energy transition.

“We believe that METS graduates will emerge as leaders and innovators in the energy industry, equipped with the skills and knowledge to drive sustainable solutions,” said Rice President Reginald DesRoches. “Together we can shape a brighter, more resilient and cleaner future for generations to come.”

Hosted by the Rice departments of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences, the program will provide a structured platform for exploring emerging areas of interest such as geothermal energy, hydrogen technology, and critical minerals recovery. Additionally, it will offer opportunities for the traditional oil and gas industry to contribute to new energy and carbon management applications, including carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) and subsurface storage.

Master of Energy Transition and Sustainability (METS) Located in an urban environment on a 300-acre tree-lined campus, Rice University seizes its advantageous position to pursue pathbreaking research and create innovative collaboration opportunities that contribute to the betterment of our world.

Today the PSM students had the pleasure of having lunch with the board member of the Bioscience and Health Policy program. Dr. Cohn is an active member of the Professional Staff at THI and served as Director of the Center for Technology and Innovation and Director of the legendary Cullen Cardiovascular Research Laboratory at the THI prior to joining Johnson & Johnson, as the Vice President for Medical Devices Companies and Executive Director of the new Center for Device Innovation at the Texas Medical Center in Houston. Additionally, Dr. William E. Cohn is one of the leaders of the team of experts developing a total artificial heart that will deliver blood by means of continuous flow rather than pulsation. This new artificial heart is smaller, less expensive, and predicted to be more reliable than previous generations of artificial hearts. William E. Cohn currently has 170 active or pending patents for his inventions and is the founder or co-founder of five venture-backed life science startups. I’m addition, Dr. Cohn is Professor of Surgery in Cardiothoracic Transplantation & Circulatory Support at the Baylor College of Medicine

Rice Natural Sciences alumnus Louis Brus (’65) has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the “discovery and development of quantum dots,” nanosized particles with unique properties “that now spread their light from television screens and LED lamps,” according to a Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announcement today.

Brus, who started his undergraduate education at Rice in 1961, shares the distinction with Moungi Bawendi and Alexei Ekimov. Their work has been crucial to the development of nanotechnology, which has helped drive major computing advances and transformed electronics. The Swedish Academy highlighted Brus’ role as “the first scientist in the world to prove size-dependent quantum effects in particles floating freely in a fluid.”

While at Rice, Brus studied chemistry, physics and mathematics and developed “a love of history that has stayed with me to this day,” he said in a statement delivered when he received the 2008 Kavli Prize in nanoscience. Brus praised his undergraduate alma mater for its “rigorous, fundamental, yet broad education.”
