Observed the first Monday in September, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.

Celebrating Pride, Advocacy, and Community 06/26/2024

As Month comes to a close, we celebrate our programs and staff members who dedicate themselves to the ongoing struggle for liberation, equality, and acceptance.

During a recent interview, SUSTAIN Wellbeing COMPASS Coordinating Center team members Dr. Bec Sokha Keo and Marcus Stanley shared their thoughts on pride and advocacy, community and collaboration, and the future work of the program and the communities they serve.

The SUSTAIN Wellbeing COMPASS Coordinating Center at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work is a vital hub in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the South. As one of four COMPASS Coordinating Centers, it focuses on mental health, trauma-informed care, substance use (especially harm reduction and the opioid epidemic), telehealth, and wellness in the context of HIV/AIDS.

EXCITING NEWS!

Congratulations to COMPASS Initiative team member and UH SUSTAIN collaborator Masonia Traylor! Masonia, Ciarra Ci Ci Coven, and the extraordinary Sheryl Lee Ralph received TWO Daytime Emmy nominations for 'Unexpected'!

The documentary short 'Unexpected' tells the story of two activists and heroes, Masonia Traylor and Ciarra Ci Ci Covin, as they create an underground network helping women cope with and survive an HIV diagnosis in the rural South. It is a story of hope, perseverance, and the power of a shared connection. 'Unexpected' highlights a critical issue facing women all over the country: HIV and explores why Black women are disproportionately affected by the disease.

Celebrating HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day with Elton John AIDS Foundation

Today, as we celebrate HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day, we reflect on our recent visit to Texas, where we met Nathan, who has been living with HIV for over 20 years. As a member of the Collective for Community Action Advocacy Group, Nathan is passionate about empowering others who are also living with HIV. He plays an important role in developing a trauma-informed care curriculum with the University of Houston (UH Graduate College of Social Work), a partner of Elton John AIDS Foundation.

This work aims to give organizations the vital tools, language, and knowledge so that they can provide more compassionate care. “When you’re talking about trauma-informed care, everyone can relate to it, everyone can connect to it,” Nathan explained. “At the age of 20, my nephew found out that he is HIV positive. I need to make sure he understands, and the people in my community understand, what HIV looks like today and what support is out there. He can look at life in a new way. It’s totally different now.”

Deeply saddened by the passing of Rev. Dr. William A. Lawson. As a leader, visionary, and relentless advocate for social justice, his legacy will forever inspire us at the Graduate College of Social Work. Rest in power, Dr. Lawson. 🕊️ "

It is with both inexpressible sorrow and overwhelming gratitude that we announce the passing of our Founding Pastor, Reverend William A. Lawson on May 14, 2024. He has completed his time of service here on earth and is now enjoying eternal rest.

In his nearly 96 years, Reverend Lawson has served as husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, as well as preacher, professor, and civil rights leader. But whatever title you may have used to describe him, it has been said many times that Reverend Bill Lawson was “Houston’s Pastor.”
