Open Postdoc Positions UTHealth is a comprehensive academic health university in Texas, uniting schools of dentistry, medicine, nursing, public health, biomedical sciences and biomedical informatics.

The UTHealth Center of Excellence on Mood Disorders is dedicated to the study of the causes of mood disorders – bipolar disorder and depression – and to the development of innovative treatments for these serious mental illnesses.

With over 20 years of funding through grants from the National Institute of Health (NIH), industry and local institutions, we are one of the leading centers for research in both adult and pediatric bipolar disorder and depression.

Our center is comprised of an active research team, consisting of several labs, programs and clinical staff. Our goal is to build on promising leads to identify biological markers and targets for definitive treatment through integrated investigations of genetics, brain structure, brain function and behavior in both, adult and pediatric bipolar disorder and depression.

The statistics are staggering. One in five adults will struggle with a behavioral disorder during their lifetime, and the ripple effects reverberate throughout the community, straining hospitals and public institutions.

“These patients have been sick most of their lives. They give up their dreams. They drop out of college. Their relationships suffer, and they are unable to hold a job,” says João de Quevedo, MD, PhD, of McGovern Medical School. “When you treat them, it’s life-changing.”

De Quevedo researches the way behavioral illnesses develop in order to uncover new treatments, such as how to help people with drug-resistant disorders.

Jair C. Soares, MD, PhD, of McGovern Medical School says that research in behavioral medicine is now “where the field of oncology was 30 years ago, before major investments created a much better understanding of the pathways and mechanisms involved in causation. This is in many ways still the last frontier in medicine.”

VNS Therapy is FDA-approved and has been shown to help people with treatment-resistant depression but it is not usually covered by insurance. The RECOVER study was designed to help change this.

This is a new research study for an FDA approved therapy. If you join the study, and have Medicare insurance, you will get all study-related care at no cost to you. You also will be paid for each study visit you complete.

Are you interested in an investigational medication for bipolar I disorder? We are looking for study participants between the ages of 18 and 65 whose depression symptoms are not well controlled with their current medications. Although there are a number of treatment options for depression, some people experience depression that doesn’t respond to treatment. This is commonly referred to as treatment resistant depression (TRD). As a result, research continues to explore other medication options.
We’re excited to announce that our clinic is taking part in this research.

We are one of many clinics conducting a clinical research study of an investigational medication for TRD and want to share some details, as it might be of interest to those who struggle with TRD.

This study is for people 18 years of age or older who have not responded to at least two different antidepressant treatments. The investigational medication being evaluated in this study is a nasal spray.

The results of this study will help provide more information about the investigational medication and whether it could one day be used alone to treat TRD.
