Recently I had the unique opportunity to revisit masterful paintings of the inimitable Tamara de Lempicka, a cool collaboration across time with a group producing events and experiences bridging temporal, geographic and cultural borders.

Researching about Tamara yielded much inspiration as she was not only an incredible and prolific artist and creative, but also a rebel and antagonist truly ahead of her time. A brave and trail blazing Polish immigrant, she moved to and spent significant time in both Houston, Texas and Cuernavaca, Mexico later in her life.

It was also a surprise and honor to meet her great grand daughter Marisa to receive access to her paintings in their best light and permission to recreate them for the first time with aerosol spray paint on a mural of this scale. I’ve always loved Art Deco and with these vibrant colors it was really fun to paint portraits in this style! and Jack Nicholson among many other notable collectors own her original works. And she’s had paintings sell for millions at auction. Mural located behind parking lot near 2nd street.

The Girl in a Green Dress on left was my favorite of her works, and on the right “in 1929, Lempicka painted one of her best-known works, Autoportrait (Tamara in a Green Bugatti), for the cover of the German fashion magazine Die Dame. This showed her at the wheel of a Bugatti racing car wearing a leather helmet and gloves and wrapped in a gray scarf, a portrait of cold beauty, independence, wealth, and inaccessibility. In fact, she did not own a Bugatti automobile; her own car was a small yellow Renault, which was stolen one night when she and her friends were celebrating at La Rotonde in Montparnasse.”

Thank you, Ms. Marisa de Lempicka!

Just wrapped up “Loretta” for The Loretta, new affordable housing in Lakeline. Foundation Communities is a homegrown nonprofit that’s been providing affordable housing and free on site supportive services in Austin for over 30 years.

Loretta depicted in the mural was the last calf born in the pasture where this community was built. She now has calves of her own and lives happily in a pasture in Leander with the rest of her herd.

Thanks to the team for the support and integrating art in this project. Shout out to .xd for the design assist! And thanks to for the photos and video. Also for the hookup on the daily.

Update: “Heartbeat of Austin” Mosaic Mural Workdays start today from 11a-7p!!

After months of preparation, we’re finally able to invite y’all to Something Cool Studios to help create this massive mosaic mural, working title The Heartbeat of Austin.

If you’ve ever been to an Austin FC game, you’ve probably seen La Murga and all the other dedicated and passionate Los Verdes Supporter Groups. This monumental mosaic mural is inspired by their electric community and commitment to uplifting Austin. Comprised of over 100,000 glass tiles, the mural will be installed permanently at CapMetro’s newly renovated McKalla Station next to Q2 Stadium in north Austin.

Join us at Something Cool Studios, a cozy East Austin bungalow turned artist studio and home to The Mosaic Workshop, where you’ll help place tiles for The Heartbeat of Austin. No experience or tools necessary!

The process is very easy — We provide you with tiles, a grid to put them in, and a guide showing you where to put each color, much like a color by numbers with tile. Each grid takes roughly 30 minutes to an hour depending on the complexity of the design, and you can create as many as you want!

What You Get..
These FREE mosaic workdays give you insight into the world of public art and mosaic making as well as provide a morning, afternoon, or evening of meditative creativity. Plus, once the mosaic is installed, you and thousands of Q2 attendees will see your hard work cemented in concrete at McKalla Station at the Q2 Stadium for decades to come.

Oh, and did we mention: you also get a free Mosaic Workshop t-shirt, mosaic art print, or take-home mosaic kit to say thank you for your help in making this mosaic mural come to life!

Located at
Something Cool Studios
1717 East Cesar Chavez St. Austin, TX 78702

No RSVP required, drop in anytime during the workday. See calendar for date and time details.

If you plan to bring a large group, contact us beforehand to coordinate.

Thanks for your help bringing this epic new mural to life! See you soon at the studio!

Touch the Art
An Interactive Exhibition

Showing tonight 6-9pm, and opening event 6-10pm on Saturday

Featuring: ANGRY CLOUD, Christina Smith, DeLoné, Hannah Busekrus, J Muzacz, Liza Fishbone, Natalie Earhart, Tabria Williford and AJ, Alia C., Aly H., Azriel J., Cole B., Cora R., Elly U., Emily S., Evan H., Faith N., Ilen V., Jacob M., Javier S., Jazmin K., Kanye, Khailou B., Larry A., Makayla, Mia, Michael F., Yuki

The idea for Touch the Art started with simply just being fans of texture. However after a visit to the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired in 2019, we knew it could be much more.

We took a step back to think about how to make our shows and art in general more accessible, specifically to people who have visual impairments.

We reconnected with Gretchen Bettes, the longtime art teacher at TSBVI, and planned a show to include their art students and featured artists who work with texture. For months, we've been visiting the students to learn how they create, and understand what it's like to experience art with visual impairment.

What came together is a whole new art experience. For the first time, everyone can touch the art on the walls.

We hope this show will serve as a catalyst for annual programming with the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
