Divorced parents should not put their children in the middle of their differences. You may never completely lose all of your resentment or bitterness about your break up, but what you can do is compartmentalize those feelings, and remind yourself that they are your issues, not your child's. Resolve to keep your issues with your ex away from your children.

The key to co-parenting is to focus on your children- and your children only. Yes, this can be very difficult. It means that your own emotions- any anger, resentment, or hurt- must take a back seat to the needs of your children. Admittedly, setting aside such strong feelings may be the hardest part of learning to work cooperatively with you ex, but it's also perhaps the most vital. Co-parenting is not about your feelings, or those of your ex-spouse, but rather about your child's happiness, stability, and future well-being.

I am serving on The Family Court Improvement Project, a statewide committee formed by the Supreme Court. We are debating a change in the current co-parenting philosophy which awards primary parenting responsibility to one parent, and limited "visitation rights" to the other. The alternative solution would be a shared parenting philosophy which would award equal parenting time to each parent. What are your thoughts?

The Alabama Supreme Court recently ruled that divorced parents cannot be forced by the court to pay for college expenses incurred by their adult children. This is a huge change in the law which has been in place since 1989. The ruling does not affect existing court orders.

Positively Positive

No matter what happens, no matter how far you seem to be away from where you want to be, never stop believing that you will somehow make it. Have a unrelenting belief that things will work out, that the long road has a purpose, that the things that you desire may not happen today, but they will happen. Persist and persevere, your desired path remains possible.
