2024 AAMU Summer Programs and Camps
Physics Department Summer Programs for High School Students
June 24 – 27 and June 3 – July 31

The Physics Department at Alabama A&M University invites local high school students to apply for two summer programs. These programs are for U.S. citizens and permanent residents. The programs, funded through the National Science Foundation, cover “Design, Fabrication, and Characterization of Multifunctional Ceramic Devices and Materials.”

The first program, Workshop on Nanoscience & Technology, is for 10th, 11th and 12th graders and runs June 24-27. There are ten (10) positions available. Students will receive $200 for participating in this workshop.

The deadline to apply is May 20. Students can apply HERE.

The second program, Research Experience for Secondary School Students in Ceramics/Nanostructures, runs June 3 to July 31. There are four positions available. Students will receive $800/month for participating in this workshop.

AAMU Pre-Freshman Bridge Program
June 9 – 21

The College of Engineering, Technology, & Physical Sciences at Alabama A&M University invites all incoming fall 2024 STEM students to the Pre-Freshman Bridge Program.

Students majoring in engineering, computer science, physics, chemistry and mathematics can take part, but they must be accepted to the University, paid all enrollment fees, and have a FAFSA on file.

The program helps students foster a relationship with the faculty and staff of the College to increase retention and give incoming STEM students a strong foundation to build on while matriculating at Alabama A&M University. The application deadline is May 1, 2024.

The AAMU Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP)
Summer Undergraduate Research Program
May 28 – July 19

The Alabama Louis Stokes Alliance for Minorities Participation (ALSAMP) Summer Bridge
Pre-College Program is a National Science Foundation-funded program aimed at increasing the quality and quantity of students completing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degree programs and increasing the number of students interested in and academically
qualified for programs of graduate study. ALSAMP supports sustained and comprehensive
approaches that facilitate the achievement of the long-term goal of increasing the number of
students who earn doctorates in STEM fields, particularly those from populations currently
underrepresented in STEM fields.

The ALSAMP program provides comprehensive attention to those factors that promote the achievement of undergraduate degrees, preparation for graduate study, and preparation for successful careers in the STEM disciplines. The AAMU Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Summer 2024 Undergraduate Research Program for LSAMP Scholars is a summer program for "CURRENT" LSAMP participants. Participants will conduct research with their research mentors and enroll in summer courses.

The 2024 AAMU Summer Bridge Pre-College Program
June 10 – 21

The Alabama A&M University (AAMU) Summer Pre-College Bridge Program is a two-week residential academic program for underrepresented minority students accepted to AAMU, who are entering first-year students, and planning to major in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM). The program will provide pre-enrollment opportunities for students, who have the potential, to pursue a career in the STEM disciplines.

Students will be able to meet with STEM faculty, STEM majors and spend some time in the various research laboratories, become socially engaged with their program cohorts, and attend informational workshops with various student services departments at AAMU. Seminars and other experiences to prepare students for the transition to college life on the “Hill” will be available for Summer Bridge students. In addition, students will visit the University Connect Centers in each of the colleges, where the students receive tutoring and academic advice in their respective disciplines.

The Meharry Medical College
Center of Excellence BS/MD 2024 Summer Enrichment Program
May 12 – June 21

The Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Medicine (BS/MD) Program is a component of the Meharry Medical College Center of Excellence (COE) supported by a grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The program aims to increase the number of culturally competent African American physicians serving medically underserved populations and assist with alleviating health care disparities.

Meharry Medical College has formal agreements with 12 selected Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) - Alabama A&M University, Albany State University, Alcorn State University, Fisk University, Florida A&M University, Grambling State University, Hampton University, Jackson State University, Southern University, Tennessee State University, Tuskegee University, and Virginia Union University. Through these agreements, students are invited to participate in a six-week program to enrich and enhance the students’ science knowledge base.

The program includes an academic year component that integrates the concepts tested on the MCAT into basic science, social science, and reading and analytical skills.
Students must meet the following criteria to be eligible for the Program:

• Black/African American.
• U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
• Economically and/or educationally disadvantaged.
• Express a desire to pursue a career as a physician or other healthcare professional.
• Minimum cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale.
• No grade less than “C” in science courses.
• Submission of an official transcript from all colleges/universities attended.
• Submission of two letters of recommendation on college/university letterhead from faculty members and/or advisors.
• Submission of 1-2 pages, double-spaced essay that describes your educational and career goals.
• A Zoom or in-person interview with the Site Coordinator, Program Coordinator, and Program Director.

Marching Maroon & White
Summer High School Band Camp
June 9 – 15

The Alabama A&M University Marching Maroon & White Band will host its inaugural High School Summer Band Camp on campus June 9-15, 2024. High Schoolers will gain experience perfecting their musicianship and skills working with professors, AAMU students, and special guests.

Overnight Camp Fee: $400.00
Commuter Camp Fee: $230.00
Chaperones: $315.00

TMCF SOAR HBCU Scholars Program
July 7 – 12

High-achieving high school juniors can now apply for The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) Seeking, Observing and Achieving Results (SOAR) HBCU Scholars Program. The program is a joint partnership with TMCF, Alabama A&M University and J.F. Drake State Community & Technical College. The free one-week residential summer program allows high school juniors (rising seniors) to live on campus and learn about Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Historically Black Community Colleges (HBCCs), college admission, financial aid and scholarship resources.

STEM Research Experiences for Pre-Service Secondary Teachers
June 1 – July 31

AAMU STEM research experience program provides opportunities for future STEM teachers to engage in a research project in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Each summer, AAMU STEM accepts eight pre-service secondary teachers who will work alongside Alabama A&M University professors and their teams to gain research experience in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.

This research experience program is open to pre-service STEM education majors attending any college or university in the U.S. The ideal candidate for this project would be a student who has completed their second year of college, is committed to becoming a teacher in a STEM field, and is available for the entire length of the summer experience. Students receive a $6,000 stipend, on-campus housing and meal plan provided.

National Defense Education Program (NDEP) STEM Internships
May 28 – July 11, 2024

The Alabama A&M University Engineering Technology and Physical Sciences Department announces a Summer STEM program funded by the National Defense Education Program (NDEP) Grant Award for student training and internships. This program is designed to jumpstart student professional development while exploring STEM education. This program will prepare students for great careers in the Department of Defense (DoD) fields.

The NDEP Summer Research Internship Opportunity for STEM Students. Only students who have successfully completed Step 1 (Fall and Spring online Seminar Sessions) are eligible to participate. (The application deadline is now expired.)

Leading participants were invited to participate in paid internships with AAMU faculty in STEM areas that align with the interests of the DoD, including:

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
Cybersecurity
5G
Biotechnology
Autonomy
Cryptography
Directed Energy
FNC3
Microelectronics
Quantum Science/Computing
Hypersonics and Space
Students from Alabama A&M University and the surrounding region with a grade point average of 2.5 or greater were encouraged to apply. Students who have successfully completed the program will receive a stipend of $6,000.

P.A.W.S (Participating in Academic Ways for Success) Program
May 28 – July 18

Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University (AAMU) is pleased to announce the return of Participating in Academic Ways for Success (P.A.W.S.) summer program designed to provide AAMU students an opportunity to take six hours of college credits while living on campus.

This eight-week residential program bridges high school seniors to the traditional first- year experience for new entering students this fall. Designed to improve retention, the program
is offered from May 28 - July 18, 2024 and students receive personalized academic advising and coaching; a series of academic success, career development, financial, and personal enhancement workshops; and other educational activities.

Additionally, participants who successfully complete the program will be eligible for a financial award to assist them with funding their education at AAMU.

AAMU Forestry and Fire Apprentice Program
June 2 – June 28

The Alabama A&M University Forestry and Fire Apprentice Program is a month-long resident camp for incoming or current AAMU students considering a career in forestry, wildlife, ecology, or wildland firefighting. Participants are trained by the U.S. Forest Service and receive fire certifications during their first week of camp.

Then, student groups are paired with professors conducting forest research from which the students prepare and present on the final day of camp.

Participants receive a $1,000 stipend and meals and room are provided.

This camp is sponsored by the U.S. Forest Service and the AAMU Forestry, Ecology, and Wildlife Program. Registration is open until May 15.

AAMU TRIO Upward Bound Summer Component
June 2 – July 18

Upward Bound is a federal TRIO program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Program participants must qualify to receive services. Services are provided to students from eight local high schools year-round including a summer residential component. Participants receive academic enrichment such as ACT preparation, math, English, science, foreign language, history/current events instruction, financial education, career exploration, and much more.

The program is designed to provide free academic access and support to promote academic success while in high school and preparation for collegiate coursework. Students must have completed 8th grade and are in high school within the target area. Students MUST apply for services.

TRiO Upward Bound - Alabama A&M University Upward Bound is a federally funded program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The program at Alabama A&M University serves 104 eligible high school students. The Upward Bound Program at Alabama A&M University aids eligible and program selected high school students in generating the skill...

Alabama A&M University has increased its housing capacity by more than 16 percent since 2022. This fall, capacity will reach an all-time high thanks to additional on-campus beds along with new University-brokered apartment options as close as three miles from campus. These efforts are part of AAMU’s work to address a national shortage of affordable housing options for students.

There is now FUNDING AVAILABLE $$$ to assist you with your enrollment costs. This money is accessible to ALL STUDENTS. Federal Funding has been provided under the CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act to support students desiring to attend or return to college. This is what you need to know to qualify:

CARES Stimulus Grants (Paid Directly to Students and available during the semester)

You Must:

· Be Registered for the Fall Semester.

· Complete an online application to be certified to receive funding (Be on the lookout for a Public Relations Blast that will provide a link to that application. Follow the instructions on how to accept your money. It’s simple to compete!)

· Have CARES - related expenses in order to receive this money.

CARES Institutional Aid (Not Paid Directly to Students)

You Must:

· Be registered for the Fall Semester.

· That’s it! If you’re registered, you’re qualified! You do not need to fill out an application or have a FAFSA on file. The university will apply this money to your balance at the end of the registration period on a case-by-case basis and according to need.

· The university has waived housing fees. There is no longer a $100.00 housing application fee or $250 deposit required. The Housing portal has been reopened and incoming students may apply until all spaces have been filled. In order to register for housing, you must be a first-time freshman or transfer student.
