EPIC FAILS in Catholic Evangelization...

How have you failed in trying to evangelize others? Have you had some "epic fails?" How did you move beyond these failures?

Here's one of John's stories about "failing" in evangelization--

John encountered Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit in a personal way during a college retreat. Intense joy prompted him to share his experience with his mom, dad and siblings, over and over again. Until one day, his mom’s exasperated response was, “If you know Jesus so well, why don’t you go talk to your cousin, Jim? He’s a drug addict. He lives in a filthy building downtown. And his mother is worried sick about him!” So off John went, a man with a mission and a thousand butterflies dancing in his stomach.

Jim stumbled to the door and greeted John with, “What do you want?”
“I just want to talk. Can I come in?” John responded. As they settled into two decrepit chairs, John blurted out, “I came to tell you about how I met Jesus.” Then he described his experience on the retreat weekend.

“I can’t hear you,” replied Jim.
“Maybe the drugs have caused hearing damage”, John thought. So he spoke louder. “I came to tell you how I MET JESUS!”
“I can’t hear you”, repeated Jim.
“Boy, he is really in rough shape,” John thought as he pulled his chair closer. now he was just a few inches from Jim.

But before he could speak again, Jim shouted in his face, “I can’t hear you! I have hated you since we were kids! You always invited my older brothers to stay at your house, but you never once invited me.” John stared at him and stammered, “Jim, I am so sorry for hurting you when we were children. Please forgive me.”

“NO!” answered Jim, signaling that their conversation and their relationship was over.

Fifteen years later, on Christmas Day—Jim called to share the joy of his own conversion to Christ and his healing from addiction. Jim said, “You’re the first person I wanted to tell, John, because it all started when you asked me to forgive you!”

Some elders came to St. Antony and asked him, “Which is the greatest of all virtues?” Each one then gave an opinion, some saying that “fasting and keeping of vigils” best help one come near to God; others said “voluntary poverty” and “detachment”; others said “compassion.” Last of all, Anthony gave his reply: “All that you have said is both necessary and helpful for those who are searching for God and wish to come to Him. But we cannot award the first place to any of these virtues; for there are many among us who have endured fasting and vigils, or have withdrawn into the desert, or have practiced poverty to such an extent that they have not left themselves enough for their daily sustenance, or have performed acts of compassion so generously that they no longer have anything to give; and yet these same monks, having done all this, have nevertheless fallen away miserably from virtue and slipped into vice. What was it, then, that made them stray from the straight path? In my opinion, it was simply that they did not possess the grace of discernment; for it is this virtue that teaches a man to walk along the royal road, swerving neither to the right through immoderate [excessive] self-control, nor to the left through indifference and laxity. Discernment is a kind of eye and lantern of the soul, as is said in the Gospel passage: ‘The light of the body is the eye; if therefore your eye is pure, your whole body will be full of light.
