Welcome to Sapper Woodworking! We're a small husband and wife shop working together to come up with Most of our woods are sourced from trees grown in Indiana.
All products on Sapper Woodworking are handmade in our small Indiana wood shop. Some of our lumber is processed ourselves from logs dropped off at our shop. There is nothing like taking a log that might have ended up as firewood and turning it into one of kind woodworking products. We hope you enjoy the products you see and let us know if you have any questions.

Woodturning basics today as we demonstrate how to wood turn a multi-axis one piece solid wooden coffee scoop. The lathe created wood scoop must be turned in two different orientations so we also show you how we made the custom jig while safely removing the scoop's opening. This scoop was turned from hickory and walnut scraps.

Woodworking for Smiles is our annual wooden toy making day to support the charitable activities of the Central Indiana Woodworkers (CIWW). On this day Sapper Woodworking hosts an open house in our workshop where our friends, family and supporters come in and make wooden toys for disadvantaged children. These toys are collected by CIWW and given to over 40 central Indiana social service agencies who deliver these special gifts over the holidays. Club wide CIWW makes about 10,000 to 12,000 wooden toys each year.
More about the Central Indiana Woodworkers is available on their website: ciww.org
The Club received IRS 501(c)(3) status in 2004, established their current DBA name as Central Indiana Woodworkers in 2009.

Wood turning! (or is it woodturning?) No but wood carving a walnut dough bowl for the first time! Woodworking is a passion for me whether wood-turning or wood carving! My recent retiree friend, we'll call her TB, answered the question “what bowl can I make you for your retirement” with “how about a dough bowl!” Dough bowl I thought...what the heck is a dough bowl! So after a quick internet image search, I figured out that I wouldn't be turning this bowl but carving it! Fun times in the shop trying a new technique! Another quick trip to the internet and a set of three angle grinder compatible wood carving disks we're ordered. (only about $22 dollars on Am**on)!
After just a few minutes using the wood carving disk I got a feel for how much material it was removing and although the entire project could be completed with just the carving disk I figured the process would go quicker if I removed a sizable portion of the material with a forstner bit before returning to the disk grinder. Once done with power carving the bowls shape, it was finished with 40 grit sandpaper before final sanding with 60, 80, 120 and 220 grits. The last step was a flood coat of walnut oil followed by touch-up coats in areas the walnut quickly absorbed the oil. I used Mahoney's Walnut utility oil which is advertised as food safe immediately and cures within about 24-48 hours.

Wood turning a segmented salad bowl using Black Walnut, Canarywood and Padauk. After acquiring about 30 nice exotic hardwood boards from a private seller, I set out to make a segmented bowl choosing to use some of the canarywood and padauk hardwoods. For some inspiration I did an internet image search using the terms “segmented bowl walnut canarywood padauk.” The result hit upon a beautiful bowl made by Marc Sitkin. It was an unique design by Marc that really caught my eye. So with just a minor design change and profile alteration, I set up to duplicate his design. I really liked the result, It's one of my favorites now! Come see how I made this bowl. A free subscription to my YouTube channel is available if you have interest in seeing other turnings.

Wood turning an Earth like Pangea bowl (Yeah, Science! & solid Breaking Bad reference). Hello and welcome to our channel. Thanks for watching and feel free to leave a comment in the YouTube chat below. I typically respond to all comments or questions within 48 hours.
This video a style departure from some of my regular wood turnings in that I am using resin as a primary design feature for this bowl, and not just an accent feature. This core wood portion is a walnut burl that had apparently been sitting in a creek. I acquired it caked in mud and grime so after a once over with a power washer it was mostly clean enough to turn. Well at least after drying out for about 15 months.
My resin woodturning playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLHfzWjqwQskLab202QoO0iK5jbg-Zg9v8&si=Sn0hf9Xbg1oTIjzE The link is also featured on the end of video thumbnails.
How to you think in turned out? Should I incorporate more resign in future turnings or just continue to feature more beautiful hardwoods?

In today's woodworking lathe video I'm taking some leftover pieces from another project and making a small bowl / vessel. The original project's video link is here: https://youtu.be/PcXr0Agy2DY . This fruit bowl project used scrapes and being that this bowl was made from those leftover glue-ups, I guess you could say that we used scraps of scraps to make this bowl.

With special guest finisher, Debbie Sapper, we're wood turning a black walnut and spalted maple bowl (or dish?) How to steps are shown using our Harvey Woodworking lathe. Wood turning a bowl can be so rewarding. Join us for our adventure!
In today's video Debbie and I will demonstrate the steps we took to turn a random piece of black walnut and some scrap spalted maple pieces into a pretty cool looking utility bowl (or dish?) After the sanding was completed, the finishing process started with Debbie applying two coats of “grain popping” BLO (boiled linseed oil), followed by 5 coats of rattle can spray lacquer, hand buffing down each coat with 0000 steel wool. I followed her with a brief slow speed buffing on the lathe followed by a buffed on coat of Carnauba wax.
