"Indianapolis rent has shot up 30% since last year. It is the highest increase in the whole country," Dee Ross, Founder of Indiana Tenant Association said. "How are you supposed to make three times the rent to move in? Minimum wage is stuck at $7.25 an hour."
"Housing is a human right, not some luxury only a few can have," Ross said.
"Our top four priorities that will protect our tenants for us to get into law will be: 1. Rent escrow. 2. Rank to council. 3. Anti-rent gouging protections. 4. Repair and deduct," Laurin Embry, Director of Indiana Tenant Association said.

The group is called A Mother’s Cry. Saturday was their first meeting of the new year. The program is organized by the Ross Foundation. The founder, Dee Ross, said this is not a typical support group, but a sisterhood.
"They are mothers helping mothers. They can relate to each other's pain. A therapist typically can't relate to that pain," said Ross.
Organizers also use the group to empower mothers to make changes to their community in hopes of preventing more women from walking through their door.

Dee Ross with the Indianapolis Tenants Rights Union says, in the pandemic, Indiana now leads the nation in evictions. Before the pandemic, the state came in second behind New York City.
“So, that should tell you it’s more than people just not paying their rent is the problem. It’s a combination of discrimination, fair housing violations, deplorable living conditions, and slumlords,” Ross said.
Supporters say the “Tenant’s Day of Action” gave renters a platform to use their voices without fear of retaliation, and to educate them on their rights to a safe, livable space. It was also a chance to urge legislators to act.
Ross said, “Every single day. Especially people of color. Black and brown families are disproportionately being impacted the most during this pandemic and also rural communities.”
Without partnering up with Hoosier Action and their assistance, along with Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana yesterday “Tenant’s Day of Action” does not happen. So we thank you all for your support, let’s keep the pressure on!
