An update from Marian University President Daniel J. Elsener

///////////

Dear Students,

I trust you are staying healthy and have begun a productive, fruitful summer. I admire the strength you’ve exhibited during these unprecedented times, and I congratulate you all on the conclusion of another successful academic year. I’m writing to provide you with more information about the fall semester. I so look forward to welcoming you back to campus.

Fall on Campus

As you know from previous communications, we are reopening our campus. To maximize the quality of our on-campus experience this fall and reduce the chance of having the semester disrupted by a viral spike, we are adjusting our academic calendar. With the exception of Marian’s Adult Programs, Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Saint Joseph’s College of Marian University - Indianapolis, and Marian University Accelerated Nursing Programs, this fall semester will begin on campus a week earlier than scheduled, on August 17. Furthermore, the on-campus portion of the semester will end on November 24, and we will continue with online instruction and the completion of finals through December 8. We will eliminate the Labor Day and fall semester breaks. This adjustment of the academic calendar best fulfills our commitment to safe, high-quality educational experiences and emphasizes the value that on-campus experiences provide the students.

In the coming weeks, we will provide you with a new schedule of activities connected with orientations, athletic training camps, retreats, and the particular academic programs mentioned above. The adjustments in the fall schedule limit student travel, and out-of-state professional travel for faculty and staff will be limited as well. At the same time, our dedicated faculty are preparing innovative approaches to providing high-quality education to respond to possible changes and conditions throughout the semester, including the development of plans to operate labs and other unique academic spaces safely. These innovative approaches will allow Marian faculty to serve our students in a way consistent with our mission and values.

We have and will continue to work with internal and external experts to determine how we will welcome you back to campus safely, while still providing a vibrant academic and co-curricular experience. We are creating plans for flexible class sizes and configurations to allow for appropriate physical distancing, and we will institute appropriate testing, masking, and other strategies to maximize the safety and well-being of our faculty, staff, and students throughout the semester.

Campus Life

Our partner Aramark is taking a highly-professional approach to cleaning and sanitizing our campus and are working diligently to ensure that academic, residential, athletic, and common areas on campus are regularly cleaned before and after activities or events. We also are refining plans that ensure residential life, athletics, theater, band, choir, and other programs continue safely and effectively.

Staff Return to Campus

Staff and faculty began returning to campus on Monday, May 18, and we will continue to bring people back in increasing numbers through the summer. We are implementing screening protocols and requiring masks in shared and common areas. We will continue these practices throughout the fall. We also are developing plans for testing and contact tracing.

Admissions Tours Resume

We are excited to resume campus tours for prospective students and families starting on June 1, with special precautions to protect staff and guests from the risk of infection. To find more information about these tours with Marian University - Indianapolis Undergraduate Admission, or to sign up for a tour time, go to marian.edu/visit.

Summer Activities

To better prepare for your return to campus in August, the usual summer activities on campus have been redesigned, and in some cases canceled, to minimize the impact on campus facilities and personnel.

Regular Updates

Marian’s campus is as lovely as it always is this time of year, but it feels empty without the people who make our community special. The faculty, staff, and administration are giving generous efforts to welcome you back to a safe and lively campus in August. I will be sharing important updates about those plans on a bi-weekly basis throughout the summer, and we will supplement those announcements with further information as needed.

Know that you and your families are in my prayers, and I look forward to welcoming you back to campus.

God bless and go, Knights!

Daniel J. Elsener
President

Sr. Norma, you have given so much to so many! Your service to the Marian community and beyond is extraordinary! You will be deeply missed!! Cheers to you on a well deserved retirement!

Peace and all good to you, my beloved Marian University community. I seldom find it difficult to express my feelings adequately, but I do find it so with this message. At the request of the General Council of my community, I am retiring from Marian as of this academic year.

I have had the privilege of serving the Marian community, both as a faculty and staff member and a member of the Board of Trustees, for almost 50 years and have been very blessed by that gift. I cannot fully express my gratitude for all the prayers offered for me during my recent health issues. Those prayers have been answered, as I feel strength returning each day. As I reflect on the years of my faculty/staff participation, the memories are overwhelmingly rich, and I find myself praying a litany of thanksgiving for shared joys and sorrows, successes and failures.

It has been such a great source of joy to share the lives of the many wonderful students who I have met over these years. They always have given me HOPE. President Elsener has said I can always consider myself a member of the Marian community, as such I hope to be on campus often—both for academic and athletic events. I shall miss all of you incredibly, but you will be in my prayer and heart daily.

May all your endeavors be graced with God’s kind of success!

With deep affection,

Sister Norma
