I rarely take pictures or videos on the first appointment; it just seems so awkward to say ‘nice to meet you can I take your picture’ (or maybe that’s just me!? 🤷🏻♀️)
I happily broke my own rule because these freshly shaped curls and that confident smile needed to be documented on the first appointment!
As much as I love this incredible hair, I love this beautiful soul even more. She’s not MY child per se, but she is a part of our chosen bonus family (as are her siblings and parents!)…. So instead of talking about her incredible hair I am just going to share few pictures of our time together, they speak for themselves though, and publicly profess my love for this family 🤷🏻♀️🖤
🖤
I think I have officially cracked the code on the most beautiful auburn brunette shade that has ever existed. What a gift to us all.
Curly loves, let’s talk about the styling process I do in the salon ….
🌈 I will talk you through the product I’m applying; how, what, when, why.
🌈 I coil up and define each curl.
🌈 I then blow dry on low speed, high heat and get everything from the base to the ends dry.
🌈 With lightly oiled hands, I deconstruct the curls, aka the shake out, aka shake and bake, aka Ricky Bobby.
🌈 Last but not least we will swoon, take some pictures and then swoon some more.
My guest had a series of unfortunate hair events before our paths crossed. She had, had long blonde hair but it was not handled with the TLC it needed:
The 3rd picture is a few months after I had gone in with the goal of getting the worst of the worst off while preserving what was healthy enough to stay. It’s rough, but it’s so much better than it was.
The 2nd picture is after we had finally got the front long enough to incorporate into the new perimeter. Finally, our girl had a hairstyle!!
The 1st photo is from last week, roughly 6 months after we first started working together, and her hair was finally healthy enough to highlight!
Moral of the story: go to a professional who will do you right and keep the integrity of your hair as the ultimate priority.
If being in the salon doesn’t bring you a sense of comfort knowing you can show up as you are and kick it with an old pal, it might be time to find a new spot.
Your time, money, and energy are too valuable for anything less. 🖤
Highlights don’t always mean blonde 💃🏻
***rhavenbooks is South Carolina’s only independent, q***r owned bookstore. They are currently working to raise money to get them into a brick and mortar. I will have the donation box (and their QR code) out until the end of this campaign for those who’d like to donate. 🏳️🌈📚🏳️⚧️
3 things our family loves about Q***r Haven Books:
🖤More Than Books: last time we saw them at we got stickers, coloring books and those cool multicolor retractable pens, in addition to books.
🖤Special Orders: If I come across a book I want for our kids or for myself, I can ask if they have it on hand. If not, they order it in and I typically have it within a week.
🖤Shop Small & Local: like many of you, our family tries to shop small & local when possible. The books we have got from Q***r Haven Books tend to be only $1 more than they are listed for on Amazon…. That $1 is beyond worth it to support a small, local company that aligns better with our values.
Well, well, well would you look at what we have here: a color correction….before and after?!?
Yes. Scroll on through the pictures to see why 😵💫
Not only did her strand test lift like it was competing in Battle of the Bands, it was also gummy and breaking off.
PIVOT!!
We ended our appointment having done a strand test ☠️, a gentle color disruptor, a moisture treatment, a trim and some serious products to help get her hair in a condition where it isn’t melting off 🫠
I think this may need to be a two part post because I have a lot of thoughts (and obviously feelings ♋️) about the situation.
Who else here gets sucked in by the flip-o-ramas in the Captain Underpants books!?? I did a weak attempt at ‘scroll-o-rama’ with this After, Before, After series of pictures 🤓🤣
Remember yesterday when I dubbed this Fringe Fall!?
👏🏻Point👏🏻In👏🏻Case👏🏻
When people come in looking for a change they usually assume they need to lost length. Nope 🙅🏻♀️
Case in point: We cleaned up the length a little bit but I went full Edward Scissorhands on the layering to adjust the shape.
When you desire a change can come from length, sure…. but it can also come from the shape 🕺🏻
Art Tour: “Come out, come out wherever you are” (print of a) poster from 1987.
It’s cute, clever and delivers a little history lesson in the fine print. I had no idea what the pink triangle stood for until I got this poster print.
For my guests that prefer the consistency of The Cover (new growth touch up and a gloss), don’t forget the impact that a Blend appointment (adding some foils) can have. It allows us to keep some subtitle dimension and allows for soft points of interest.
Ideal appointment schedule: The Cover every 6-10 weeks & switch it up to The Blend every 3rd appointment.
Don’t mind me over here just making vibrant copper dreams come true. 👩🏻🦰👑
Let’s be real though, this has been a long time coming.
Thankfully this wonderful guest trusted me and the process. Dipping our toe in a few times before cannonballing into the deep end, if you will.
This was the cannonball appointment…and what a splash we made!
Eat your heart out Goldilocks.
If you have ever perused though my website or online booking you may have noticed I don’t have different sets of pricing.
Back in 2019 I came across and it’s like a lightbulb went off. Hair has no gender so why would it be priced as such?!
In the years since I took the training, I have been in 3 different salon environments; a suite in Iowa, a great commission salon in South Carolina and now in a cozy little suite in SC. I am proud to have implemented the practices of creating a safer salon in each space.
This training is one of the most impactful and one of the most important of my career to date, and I don’t see that changing.
“I am to make my chair an affirming and inclusive space for all people. Therefore I proudly offer pricing that is not based on age or gender.” ✌🏼🖤🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
Some times we need to achieve new goals in stages….
Our goals: more cohesively in the color, less red in the copper , more gold in the copper and some kind of pop.
During the consultation we ranked our priorities so that I knew where to focus the majority of our efforts.
We decided cohesively (top to bottom) and the tonal shift (copper-red to copper-gold) we’re our top two.
Now that we have a foundation that we’re happy with, we will work on adding pops 😍
Art Tour. Etsy for the win.
The 🌏 throwing up the ✌🏼with a friendly little reminder just makes sense.
Our kids that are BIG into protecting the environment…Like chasing trash on the beach & picking up trash on our walks, into protecting the environment.
The ✌🏼 matches a tattoo I got with some of my best friends back in Iowa (love you, miss you).
And honestly couldn’t we all use a reminder to do good in the world on occasion!?
If this doesn’t make you a believer in the importance of a haircut (and deep treatment), I’m not sure anything will.
By evening up the perimeter and being intentional with the curls, we were able to make her hair look more full.
Products used: Curlicue Cream, TrueSoft Oil, and Structure Repair Leave In Cream 🙏🏼
There are very few things in this life that just make sense. You know what one of those things is though? This chick as a redhead with full fringe. God bless 🙏🏼

You’re a brunette…. But it’s summer and you want to go lighter. No, you don’t have to be blonde.
Sure, the process makes it look like you’re going blonde but the magic happens when I am formulating the gloss. Keeping the tones cohesive and knowing which levels will give us dimension without looking too light.
Formula:
Base color: Shades EQ: 3NB 2:1 6NB
Gloss: Shades EQ: 8P 1:1 8GI
Well friends, it took weeks of preparation, hours upon hours of getting the suite ready, long days making phone calls, countless trips to Home Depot, and lots and lots of hugs….but I’m officially in my cozy little suite!!
My first day in my new suite was supposed to be Tuesday but I decided to take the day off to join our son’s class on a field trip instead. Followed by awards night at gymnastics. What better way to celebrate my first day being self employed (again) than to take the day off to be with our kids?!
I have felt so much love from guests, friends, former coworkers, and our families. Big love 🖤
You can now catch me creating beautiful hair in suite 21 at 👩🏻🎨💃🏽💃🏻
By a show of hands, who else has curl envy!? 🙋🏻♀️
Our mission: maintain length, create a less triangular shape, and bring in a little more warm dimension.
