BSA Visual Storytelling Workshops

BSA Storytelling Workshops promote the art of storytelling, using photography, video and audio. The 2015 workshop is June 7-13, Philmont Training Center.

The BSA Photographic Workshops started with a fall gathering at Philmont Scout Ranch in 2011. Since then regional workshops have been held at Bert Adams Scout Reservation with the Atlanta Area Council in 2012 and one at Beaumont Scout Reservation with the Greater St. Louis Council in 2013.

The first of a new feature that we are starting in the council. Each month will be a new video highlighting what is going on in the council.

We will be doing several parts the first month. Once we started filming, they just kept saying great info. Instead of doing one 20 minute video, that nobody would watch, we are trying to keep them to 3 minutes. Hopefully they will get more exciting as we film from each camp. So far, the response has been great.

Our Story

Visual storytelling promotes the Scouting mission. Sharing our compelling stories helps attract the next generation of Scouts and Scouters and makes more people aware of the impact Scouting has on our society.

So how do we tell effective stories? Impactful photos and videos engage viewers and are memorable. In this course, we will explore effective composition and the importance of capturing peak action and expression. We cover methods for gathering quality audio and effective interview techniques. We teach about multiple tools, starting with our smartphones, then moving to digital cameras and digital voice recorders. We discuss the content of photographs and video and what makes them effective stories.

But what good is a compelling story without sharing it? Learning how to use social media to share our stories with our network of friends and relatives is the most important aspect of this course. Today, we can reach hundreds or maybe thousands of people through social media with stories about some of the most meaningful experiences in our lives, which include Scouting. This is a hands-on course. Youโ€™ll capture and share stories from day one and will hopefully share regularly when you return home.
