9/13 Today in Florida History from the Florida Historical Society!

1597 – Father Pedro de Corpa, a Franciscan mission priest, was killed on this date by Guale Indians during a revolt at the Tolomato Mission in northeast Florida (now southeast Georgia). The Spanish mission system in Florida and Georgia was originally designed only for the conversion of Native Americans to Christianity, but the missions became important centers for social interaction and trade between Europeans and Native Americans. By the beginning of the eighteenth century, however, most of the Spanish missions in the interior of Florida were abandoned due to the decline and relocation of many Native American groups.

Republicans want to take Florida educational model nationwide with party platform 07/28/2024

In May 2024, the Florida Board of Education approved updated social studies standards for the state, including new requirements for teaching African American history. The 217-page standards are set to take effect for the 2024 school year and include new instruction on the Sept. 11 attacks and Asian American and Pacific Islander history. However, the standards have also drawn criticism for their framing of certain topics, including slavery.

Some of the most controversial aspects of the standards include:

Enslaved people gained skills
The standards require teachers to instruct middle school students that enslaved people developed skills that could be used for their "personal benefit". Some opponents have called these standards "atrocious" and say that there are no benefits to slavery.

The 1921 Massacre
The standards also include lessons on the 1921 Tulsa Massacre, which involved white supremacists burning down a wealthy Black community and killing at least 300 Black residents. The standards suggest that African Americans were responsible for instigating the massacre, which some opponents have called a "contortion of U.S. history".

The and
The standards clarify that high school instruction on the Rosewood and Ocoee massacres should include acts of violence perpetrated against and by African Americans.

Atlanta’s thriving vegan food scene got its start in the Black communities of West End 07/13/2024

The Spelman archives contain photos of students tilling a garden on campus, said Benoit, including one image taken in front of Giles Hall without a gate. The lack of a gate is significant. It meant the college had a closer connection to the community beyond its campus.

“Whenever there’s an urban garden, an urban farm, and no gate, the community is getting fed. It wasn’t only the students here on this campus, but [the community] is getting fed,” she said.

Atlanta’s thriving vegan food scene got its start in the Black communities of West End While growing in popularity across America, vegan restaurants aren’t new to many Atlanta communities. Although the city has seen an increase in plant-based restaurants over the last decade, veganism has deep roots in the city’s westside neighborhoods, dating back decades. This is especially true...

Its the same gravy...just heated over.

On July 9, 1868, South Carolina and Louisiana were the final two states for the necessary three-quarter vote needed for the adoption of the 14th Amendment. With these states ratifying the Amendment, it was passed and adopted on the same day and made part of the US Constitution.

The 14th Amendment is by far one of the most important and influential Amendments to the US Constitution. It was conceived by “Radical Republicans” under the direction of Thaddeus Stevens in April of 1866 as a continuation of the newly passed Civil Rights Act of 1866, to ensure the protection and permanence of the act.

The 14th Amendment not only specifically outlined the citizen question for Black Americans as, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, … are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” But it also outlined the “due process” and “equal protection of the laws” for these new citizens.

While the 14th Amendment was never fully realized during the Reconstruction period, it has been the foundation of many important Supreme Court Decisions since its ratification, like: Plessy v. Ferguson, Brown v. Board of Education, Roe v. Wade, and Obergefell v. Hodges.

Did you know that residential heirs’ property accounts for up to 11% of parcels in some counties in the Southeast? Additionally, 55% of all adults and 72% of nonwhite adults do not have a will, leading to future generations of heirs’ property issues. In serving the City of Atlanta, I’ve seen numerous examples underscoring the importance of estate planning.
