The Evansville Fund would like to bid farewell to our first CFSW student advisory member, Dawson Kopf. Dawson will be graduating in just a couple days from Evansville High School and is planning to continue his education at UW Madison this fall, majoring in accounting. As a board, we could not have been more blessed by our first student advisory member. Dawson took the position so seriously and contributed so much during his time with us. This includes obtaining items for our annual fundraiser and securing Nation Honor Society students to volunteer for the event, which was beyond appreciated. Best of luck Dawson, you will truly be missed!

Thank you to Annie Larson, a lifelong Evansville resident, for the beautiful and historic mural in downtown Evansville. Through the support of the Evansville Fund, Annie brought a unique part of Evansville’s history to life. Be sure to stop by the intersection of Madison Street and Main Street and enjoy the completed project.

Below, you will find a brief interview with Annie describing this great project.

-What inspired your ideas for the mural in downtown Evansville?
Growing up in Evansville and learning about the history of George W. Hall bringing the circus to town was a great memory. Remembering stories such as an elephant being buried in town always stuck with me. Later, when Ruth Ann Montgomery wrote articles about the history of Evansville, all these memories came back to me.

-What have you enjoyed most about taking on this project?
I really enjoyed the people dropping by to say hi and ask about the mural. It was fun to tell their kids about the stories I had heard when I was their age.

-Were there any challenges that came with this work?
The weather definitely presented some challenges from time to time. I also learned that painting a mural this large from up close can make it difficult to gauge its fit in relation to the overall project.

-Have you ever taken on a project like this before, and what types of artwork are you most experienced with?
I painted a dance floor at the Red Barn back in the early 90s. I also painted some downtown windows for homecoming when I was in school. I even created small murals for my nephews in their bedrooms when they were kids, but nothing like this.

-Considering the beautiful and historical artwork you’ve brought to the community, where else in Evansville do you see the talents of local artists on display? In what other ways would you like to see Evansville continue to celebrate local talent?
The architecture in Evansville is truly what inspired me as a kid and still today. Those continuing to upkeep the beautiful, historic houses in Evansville are inspiring. I would love to see a mural on the wall of the Grange next to the Eager Free Public Library. I love the mural on Roger Berg’s office on Main Street. The train depot mural downtown is great too.
