Happy Indian Independence Day! Yesterday, we celebrated India's 77th Independence Day in Times Square, NYC! We’re so grateful to have performed the Indian Classical Dance form Odissi (from the State of Odisha) for the installation of the Chakra Exhibit!
Our dance was an invocation to the elephant-headed Lord Ganesha, who is believed to be the remover of all obstacles, while our dance postures were inspired by the temple carvings and structures on architectural walls in India.
Thanks to Indo-American Arts Council for spearheading this event and inviting Surati and our Founder-Artistic Director Rimli Roy to lead the Odissi performance. We performed in the presence of Sarod Maestro Amjad Ali Khan and other dignitaries. Thanks to the City of New York, Michelin Star Chef Vikas Khanna, India in New York and others who worked to make this momentous event possible. A special shoutout to NY Commissioner of Cultural Affairs Laurie Cumbo for striking a dance pose with the Surati team.
