Ponies: Not Just for Kids Any More - By Sue Weakley: Smaller equines are upping the fun for many adult dressage riders—and they’re holding their own against the big guys in the show ring.
We may need a bigger banner if we keep this up! Way to go all!!
Two bronze medalists, two 2nd level scores towards medal, Pony Cup champ, Jovee Champ, Jr High Score, Open High Score, Vintage Award, many Regional qualifying by scores, successful debut at I-2, a few breaking 70s scores, Arabian High Point, and probably more! But more importantly this crew is dedicated and works hard and it’s fun to see it come together!
Thanks to all who also helped or came out to support on the side. Thank you to South Carolina Dressage and Combined Training Association (SCDCTA) for continuing to put on this show which we appreciate!

Jane Renner is a Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medalist with USDF. From 1990-1997 she was Region III Champion at Grand Prix and Grand Prix Freestyle, earned Horse of the Year rankings at Grand Prix Freestyle for Trakehner Breed, and was USDF and MSCTDA Reserve Champion Grand Prix Freestyle. In 2011 she was Rocky Mountain Dressage Breed Champion, and in 2012 was Rocky Mountain Dressage 1st Level Freestyle Champion, and Training Level Pony Champion. In 2014 she was Connemara Breed Champion at the National Dressage Pony Cup in Lexington, KY, and third in All Breeds for the Connemara Breed. In 2015 she was 1st Level Champion as well as Reserve Champion in the Freestyle at the National Dressage Pony Cup in Lexington, KY. She also won USDF All Breeds for the Connemara Breed at 1st Level and Musical Freestyle. She coached North American Jr./Young Riders Championships in 1995 and 1996 for Region III with 2 of the 4 team members her personal students. She has trained with top classical instructors such as Col. Charles Murphy, Pamela Fitzwilliams, Bella Buttykay, Col. Benjt Lundquist, Robert Dover, Linda Zang, Uwe Steiner, Hokan Thorne, Linda Alicki, Leslie Webb, and most recently Janet Foy. She has attended regular clinics with many of the top USET riders around the country and competed her Connemara ponies nationwide. While residing in Colorado, she continued to train and teach, traveling to conduct clinics and judge schooling shows around the country offering a fresh approach to classical dressage as it applies to the different breeds. She offers an in-depth teaching technique to develop a rider’s ability to develop the skills needed for the Pyramid of Training as outlined by USDF.
After retiring from the dressage competition arena, Jane furthered her accomplishments competing and training in the sport of Working Equitation where she trained with Nuno Matos through the Advanced level. She applied and earned her “L” judges license with Working Equitation United. She credits her background for this sport to her mother who for over 65 years taught centered riding using obstacles as the catalyst for developing balance in the rider. She has carried on her mother’s tradition of incorporating cross training and obstacles in preparing horse and rider for the skills needed in this sport. Jane continues to teach clinics throughout the country reinforcing the curriculum of her book “3 Days Out, 2 Days In” that will be available on Amazon in 2024. Her training booklet, “Moving Up with Cross Training” is available now for private purchase.

Rain or shine - nothing is stopping this crew!
Special congratulations to Carol Lasnier for doing her Century Club ride (rider + horse age = 100+) on Luna with a Training Level Freestyle! Something she has been waiting to do for the last two years. The sun came out for her!
The rest of us soaked down to our boots rode through. Big shout out to Theresa Smelser who braved her first dressage show ever on Sudi! So proud of Mourão behaving like a gentlemen at his first show! It won’t be long until Sharon Herz-Freilich will be in the show ring! Poor Bucky was not a fan of the puddles but Amelia stuck it out at Training 3 and DSE getting good scores on parts she’s been working on. Maddie and Happy won the best dressed award, cruised through the poles which Happy was extra excited about, and made 2nd level look easy! And V the Queen and Haley looked lovely in their First and Second Level tests. Thank you Ava, Terri Seignious, Elizabeth Sharpe, Ludivine Renaud, Lynn Cobb Studios, and Kindred for helping out on the side!
Overall we had fun!! 🌦️🌦️🌦️
