FOR THE YOUNGER OF US: During the "Cold War" between NATO and Warsaw Pact (Soviet Union) did not end until the '90s. The border between the territories of the two sides was called "The Iron Curtain". 110 miles behind the Iron Curtain in the Communist territory, was the city of Berlin, East Germany, which had not yet been turned back over to the Germans after WWII. The Allies Komen Tura (Commanding Generals of the British, French, Americans, and Russians) controlled it. During POTUS JFK's tenure, the Russians (Soviets) put up a wall around the Western side of Berlin where the others (British, French, & Americans) were located. It was known as "The Berlin Wall". NATO soldiers stationed there were deeply and overwhelmingly surrounded and had a 45-minute life expectancy if war broke out. POTUS Ronald Regan stood at the gate (Brandenburg Tur) proclaimed: "Mr. Gorbachev, Open this Gate,... Mr. Gorbachev, Tear Down This Wall"... and the wall came crumbling down in the Greatest Celebration of my lifetime. My family and I were standing and photographing Uncle Ronnie about 30 yards away. I was the Training NCO and a Team Leader for Alpha Co, 4th BN, 502d Infantry, Combat-In-Cities Team, Berlin Brigade (Only unit in Europe that had a TAB), WWII Occupational Forces '85-'88. We were there to remind the Germans they lost, and to keep a foothold in Enemy (Soviet Union) Territory. By Far, Berlin Brigade was The Toughest assignment I ever had in 36 years of service. Those stationed there during Chernobyl Incident, VA declares presumptive exposure to ionizing radiation,... and to me personally; presumption it was the cause of my cancer. {on VA list of those exposed}.
Berlin, East Germany and May Day
…..
….12+ years before my birth, on the First of May (“May-Day”), (a day already meaningful to the Russians), Adolph Hi**er committed su***de, instigating the surrender of N**i forces unto the Allies Kommandatura in 1945. {Germans on Hi**er’s death: ‘You have escaped. We are left behind. A nation, A nation which must pay for your crimes. And it will pay, Heavily. Why? Why did we do it? Lay waste to a whole continent, and all in the name of a lunatic, hysterical despot. The question I will imagine will be asked a thousand years’. } On the First of May, 1982, my son; Jason Robert was born(Robert “Bob” Jerry Wise, Jr. was his God-Father). Jason’s sister Heather was born on the Second of May, 1977... (Jason couldn’t wait 3 hours to have the same birthday five years apart
December 5th, 1985 I was posted to assignment with the Allies Kommandatura - WWII Occupational Forces, Berlin Brigade, as Training NCO of Alpha Company, 4th Battalion, 502d Infantry, US Army, Berlin, East Germany (110 miles ‘behind’ the Iron Curtain border between NATO and Warsaw Pact Forces / Soviet Union). I was promoted there to Sargent (after making the ‘Commandants List’ in Primary Leadership Development Course) with less than Three years in service. The Commander Blooded my rank on one side and the First Sargent Blooded the other. The Battalion Commander asked me to be the Battalion Photographer for Area Beautification R&R areas and Battalion hallways and offices. He also tasked me with setting up an Obstacle Course, (my Demonstration Team did the course in less than 6 minutes, the fastest anyone else did it was over 11 minutes). I got a letter from the Lt. Colonel (attaboy) and rewarded with a mission to recon Frankfurt, in West Germany. I was also selected for a team of 6 Americans and 6 Germans, to do stunts down the side of the 2d highest building in Europe and highest in Berlin, during their city’s 750th Birthday Celebration.
I and my family were 30 yards away from POTUS R.Reagan when he spoke the immortalized words at Brandenburg Tur: “Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate, Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”…At McNair Konsern (Infantry barracks), Sylvester Stallone told us: “You are the real Rambos, I’m just an Actor”! (I have many great photos of Regan and Stallone on Cibachrome from Kodachrome.)
Jason (daughter and wife too) was in Berlin from 1986 to 1988 but never got to see the May-Day Parade in East Berlin’s Russian Sector. (Jason is the youngest American Hero I ever heard of, having correctly identified a WMD and a Terrorist, thus saving his class at TAR Elementary from destruction... He was Five or Six years old) My family saw several Freedom Day parades in which I marched.
We lived in Dupple Housing for American families, 200 – 300 yards away from the Berlin Wall and East German Machine Gun Platforms. (My daughter Heather knew when their AK-47/74 would run out of ammo and when it would begin again after reloading it, from hearing so many times as they lay down to sleep) After the bombing of LaBells Disco and the many soldiers who died, my children went to school in a bus, each protected by four heavily armed jeeps and MP’s. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/trump-invokes-antisemitic-tropes-while-discussing-his-support-for-israel/ar-AARVaaE?ocid=msedgntp
Trump invokes antisemitic tropes while discussing his support for Israel “They’re Jewish people that run The New York Times,” the former president said, alleging that the paper "hates Israel."
WHAT do we do when we love someone? Do we not put our heart in our hand and extend it out to them? Does this state of surrender render you endangered by/to pain? Is it not like the sharp edge of the blade over the heart of hearts what we do to love? Yaiba/Kokoro-no-kokoro... Budo Ikkan!

TO LEARN THE WAY OF THE SWORD: Don't use one! Get your foundational technique in Taijutsu down with no weaknesses, (especially Taihenjutsu/Macuso) and discover what your preferences are First, as Budo Taijutsu IS the sword technique; {assuming you are talking about a selection for dueling} linear/circular/diagonal, close/far, striker/grappler, slice/dice/pierce/hack, small/large circle, up/down... how do YOU Move? Do you use only the 4 inches of tip from a swinging motion, or, do you grapple using the whole sword.. .sliding the yaiba edge, cutting a trail? ... get a set of good quality bokken/Subroto with the following "Blade" lengths (in inches); 4 to 7, 9 to 18, 22 to 28, 30 to 36, 38 to 42... with handles from 4 to 14 depending upon preferences... {with arches/curves commensurate with swords' intended use}. The most durable wood ones are available from Kendo/Kenjutsu school shops, {not usually from martial arts supplies online} If you can find the "Special Projects" site of "Cold Steel Knives", you can get them made of cheaper but even more durable Delron/polyamide. Once you KNOW what lengths work best for the way You move, Then, buy a 1095 steel blade, (don't go to a lower number), if you have lots of discretionary funds to spend, L6 Bainite steel is great!

Bujinkan dojos vary widely depending upon the instructors personality, willingness to teach all they can as fast as they can, or stringing you along holding a carrot out in front of you (more interested in "The Business" than the class-mates) , or lacks the knowledge & understanding to teach (if only capable of technique when you "Let-Them"). Not all of them teach in the same way nor the same things. If the class is less than 2 hours or there are less than 3 classes weekly, it holds you back... which is great if it is your preference or your vocation does not rely on combat skills. If after training, you aren't hurting (badly needing a HOT salt-bath asap) and no methodologies were taught using the pain method, you might never be able to fight your way out of a paper-bag! The First School of Bujinkan skills / waza at America's Most Combat Capable Military Post; Fort Bragg, NC, were My 2000+ students from predominantly Army 82d AirBorne Infantry - Artillery - others / Rangers / Special Forces / Detachment Delta (Delta Force) / Pope-AFB / CID 3d Region Command and FBI agents / MP's / MI / Psy-Ops / Camp McCall / JFK SWC, etc... (Look on my profile for who and what I was back then '88-'91). So of course most civilians couldn't even contemplate the insanity of our training, very few civilians could keep it up for long. We trained from 1900 hrs well past 2200 hrs (Minimum 3 hours but sometimes 5) Seven Days a week. Weekends had different hours, Saturday 1000 hrs to 1600 hrs. Sunday class lasted from 0800 til 2000 hrs for Open House so those who missed something or needed help personally, I was there. We held and travelled to training seminars when affordable and got to know the Seniors (Shihans) instructors. I could only get certain things from one and other things from someone else, very frustrating and financial Black Hole with these, then 1992 & 1996 Atlanta Tai kai's while training with the Soke, I met many wonderful sensei's who filled in the blanks. Most schools were run by and for civilians who understood little of the art of combat. Self-defense mostly schools have had practical combat arts or Combatives watered down (to reduce 'civil-liabilities' and insurance costs). We trained in All Combat Methods available: Fi****ms under all conditions, Archery from horseback, Sword & knife skills, a wide variety of other classical Ninja and Samurai weapons / tools, weather forecasting, using terrain features, strategies, sentry removal by land or water, tons of stealth training, camouflage and concealment, plus Taijutsu and many other arts at 1/2 speed usually, sometimes 3/4, most other schools trained at 1/4 speed. So pick your instructors carefully to obtain the enlightenment You seek!
I teach Martial Arts only, "self-defense" classes are ok for children like Karate / Kung-Fu or better yet; Judo. Martial Arts (Art of War / Combatives for the Soldier) should not be taught to children. The only time I ever taught anyone under 18 was My two children, and one other at Fort Bragg in the '80's. Gymnastics and Judo are great pre-training regiments!
Soke was always saying don't worry about not getting it (the waza), it is future technique, which through different lengths of time while training, the real waza or "understanding" of it rather than just the knowledge of it arrives as an exalted epiphany. Then he would say: "Keep Goin, Keep Going, Keep going", being on the path was the destination. I'd like to transmit oral tradition about four variations or levels of two words and what they mean in each arrangement. First I'll List, then Explain... see if you know the lists' meanings without reading the explanations. THE LIST: 1] Unconscious Incompetence... 2] Conscious Incompetence... 3] Conscious Competence... 4] Unconscious Competence...
This applies to learning to ride a bike, drive a car, use a cell phone, becoming a shooting sport or fighting competitor, being a therapist, oil painting on canvas, and also applies to learning our waza (technique)! Knowing a technique is not the same as understanding it. You can know a technique from youtube but understanding usually requires personal thoughts and feelings shared with another face to face and hand to hand in person. This is known as Oral Tradition and is used because some things can't be learned from a book or video!
THE EXPLANATION: 1] Unconscious Incompetence... when you knoweth not what you're doingeth and you do not realize what it is you do not know or understand. Fishing, many use a pole and line and hook and bobber and worm or cricket, they go to a place where there is easy access to the banks of the body of water. They put on the worm and dip it in the water. If the person had no knowledge that there are no fish in that body of water, they were Unconsciously Incompetent... fishing a place where there are no fish, unless intentional, inhibits learning, therefore prudent to seek teachings... 2] Conscious Incompetence... is like when I try to keep up with my teacher playing guitar but do not possess the skills required to meet the feat! He can do scales and riffs at a much higher rate of beats per minute. As I realize I have short-comings keeping me from reaching my goals I am Consciously Incompetent... 3] Conscious Competence... As I was being trained by Walley Dallenback (won Indy 500 twelve times) in his School of Protection Specialist Driving, he taught me to roll the combatant's vehicle with my vehicle driving maneuvers. Once I got the technique down after rolling a couple cars on the race track I became Consciously Competent... I knew what I was doing if I was concentrating consciously to remain competent... 4] Unconscious Competence... Having studied True Battlefield Martial Arts since 1972 and authorized to teach since 1988, and having taught over 2200 mostly military, firefighters and police personnel True Martial Arts, those that would work in the most seedy locations as well as on the battlefield, and my ability to respond like an echo or mirror image of my combatant and remain untouched by their efforts, means I no longer have to think about what I am doing or going to do to perform most efficiently and effectively in my techniques, tactics and strategies. I've learned thousand of techniques and for a very long time never had to choose a waza or think about what waza might happen to me... Face of no face, into the wind the most fierce tiger can find no place to insert his claws!
Contemplate Future Technique, use visualizations when meditating or resting, evaluate yourself and where you fit on the 4 point continuum mentioned here so your path will become fruitful. Then realize it is all a never-ending circle or spiral, once you achieve realizations of Unconscious Incompetence in anything, it is natural to train to become Unconsciously Competent, You get out of life what you put into it, no one will do the Hard Work for you! Becoming Unconsciously Competent is what the difference is between a waza that works and one that does not!
call or write for info and appointments... training by appointment only.
I provide training in Ninja (Shinobi) and Samurai (Bugeisha) Combat Martial Arts. Our Waza (technique) are for destroying enemies although they can be used gently for self-defense.
Since moving to Johnson City, TN, amongst numerous medical procedures, I have had surgery on Left wrist and elbow, Total Shoulder Replacement surgeries on both sides, one on 16 July 2019, and will have surgery on Right wrist and elbow as soon as my new shoulder is broke in. This does Not slow down my training schedules or teaching Martial Arts! never give up, Keep Going!

Traditional Japanese Martial Arts of the Samurai and the Ninja
Bujinkan Masayoshi Dojo - Shidoshi Mark "Masayoshi" Norman
Traditional Japanese Martial Arts of the Samurai and the Ninja ... The Mysterious School of Life, Transformation, and Living ... Martial Arts of Distance and Timing
The Bujinkan Masayoshi Dojo is a Shibu or branch of the Bujinkan Dojo Hombu or home school. It is led by Shidoshi Mark Norman, who was given the martial arts name of "Masayoshi" by Grand-Master Masaaki Hatsumi in 1989 after being awarded a Shidoshi-ho license. Bujin means Supreme Warrior or War God and the school was named after Hatsumi Sensei’s' teacher; Takamatsu Sensei. Both worldwide legendary figures: Hatsumi Sensei and Takamatsu Sensei, have been heralded as the greatest warriors and instructors the world has ever seen. Masayoshi or Righteous Heart (also "Heart of Justice") has taught over 2200 students who were preponderantly military or law enforcement personnel. Masayoshi emphasizes foundational skills so that whatever waza or technique is utilized, it is efficient, effective, and natural. Masayoshi has Denshi or student rank requirements that far exceeds those of his peers and ensures that all students have an overall knowledge of the completeness of our systems. Moreover, Masayoshi leads Denshi to "understanding" which is far better than mere knowledge! As well as waza or technique, understanding of nuisances and finesse are emphasized.
The Bujinkan Dojo has over 1800 Shidoshi or Instructors and Shihan or Masters. It is the largest single school of true martial arts on the planet! It is based upon the Nine Traditions or families: Gikan Ryu, Gyokko Ryu, Gyokushin Ryu, Koto Ryu, Kukishinden Ryu, Kumogyakure Ryu, Shinden Fudo Ryu, Takagi Yoshin Ryu, and Togakure Ryu. These are the surviving nine families or schools that have a direct lineage of Soke or Grandmasters from the Japanese feudal "Warring States" period to the present. Prior to his transition, Takamatsu Sensei transmitted the lineages of the nine schools to Hatsumi Sensei. Hatsumi Sensei maintains his private and public dojos in Japan and welcomes Bujinkan members to train with him as much as possible. Hatsumi Sensei's student, Masayoshi, prepares his students to fair favorably among their peers when presented in Japan. What is taught here are True Bugei or Martial Arts!
