On the eve of 9/11, I saw these times, and I could not help thinking about the fact the 9/11 sites represent all of America. I have had the honor to have visited all three of the crash site, the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, PA. These sites are symbolic of America's prosperity, military might, and the hard-working, blue-collar rural America's who work each day to survive. Each site was special to me, but I think I related to Shanksville the most. The Shanksville Fire Department was and is an all volunteer force who struggled with funding and recruitment and retention even before the rest of America's volunteer fire departments did. When I was there the memorial was not constructed. A single conex box transformed into an construction office was the only real structure. Tge office was occupied by a single individual when I arrived. The gentleman and talked for several hours. I learned so much about the event, but I learned more about how this event changed this man who was a member of the Shanksville VFD. It was apparent he was now an expert on commercial plan crashes and interfacing with the Feds. We found many things in common as we talked about how we were raised and the communities who shaped us. I wish I had gotten this man's name. I remember our conversation occasionally, and I would love to talk to him again. I was there in 2003 or 2004. I pray he has continued to cope well and is thriving today. Never Forget!
Final thought! The fact that the presidential debate is tonight is so ironic because it represents our nation's divisiveness on the eve of what represented on of our most uniting moments in American history!
