ETSU launches local school supply drive ETSU is launching the “Bucs Stuff the Bus” school supply drive as part of their annual Founders Week, an opportunity for faculty, staff and students to give back to local schools.
ETSU’s Dr. Chuanfu Li and Dr. Xiaohui Wang, both faculty in the Quillen College of Medicine, have separately secured more than $5 million in funding to research sepsis, a life-threatening blood infection.
Renowned for its commitment and dedication to training physicians to practice in rural and underserved areas, the Quillen College of Medicine has also made its mark as a research institution – regularly pulling in significant grant funding to investigate health issues affecting those in our region and well beyond.

ETSU researchers seeking to better understand sepsis infection Researchers with East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine have secured more than $5 million in federal funding this year to research sepsis, a life-threatening blood infection that arises when the body’s immune response causes injury to tissue and organs.

Congratulations to Dr. Cuihong Jia, an associate professor with the Quillen College of Medicine, for earning the university’s Distinguished Faculty Award for Research.
Jia has been with ETSU since 2014 and has established herself as one of ETSU’s premier researchers with nearly three dozen publications under her belt. Much of Jia’s research is on neurological issues like the sense of smell, post-traumatic stress disorder and multiple sclerosis.

Introducing Lucille Klement A new band on campus, Lucille Klement, traces its origins to ETSU and the university’s ability to create an environment for musical talent.
ETSU has appointed Dr. Dena Evans as the new Dean of the ETSU College of Nursing. She currently serves as Vice Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs at the University of South Florida College of Nursing. She will begin her new role at ETSU in January 2025.
“I am deeply honored to lead the ETSU College of Nursing,” Evans said. “Having grown up in rural North Carolina, I have a profound appreciation for nursing’s role in addressing the unique needs of rural communities. I am eager to collaborate with our dedicated faculty, staff, students and community members to build upon the college’s outstanding reputation.”
