SCAM ALERT: There is a phishing scam in Alaska that falsely claims that the court is calling Alaskans about their grandchildren or children being placed in jail and that money is needed to release them from jail. Scammers are using family nicknames in some instances to trick individuals into paying money, making the phone number appear to be from a court system number, and impersonating police officers. Individuals receiving these calls should hang up on the scammer and contact their local police department. If you are able to identify the caller’s phone number, please provide this information to the police.

The Alaska Court System will not call you to request bail or fine payment over the phone. If you have questions about an individual situation, please contact the relevant Department of Corrections location (https://doc.alaska.gov/institutions) or call the local courthouse (https://courts.alaska.gov/courtdir/index.htm )

We are so proud of the Alaska Court System Access to Justice Services and the Family Law Resolution Program, which was recognized with the Erwin Cantor Innovative Program Award by the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts on June 4, 2021. The photo is from the awards

Jeannie Sato, Director of Access to Justice Services accepted the award on behalf of the court system and her team. Below is an excerpt from her acceptance speech:

I want to thank everyone at AFCC for this award. I’m really grateful to accept it on behalf of our entire Access to Justice team and our Administrative Director, Stacey Marz.

I started in this position as Director of Self-Help & Language Access services on January 1, 2020, after Stacey became the Court’s Administrative Director. Her mission for the Alaska Court System is that every action we take is aimed at providing access to justice for all, and great customer service.

With that in mind, we reimagined, consolidated, and added to this department, changing from self-help services to Access to Justice Services so we could be sure our staff and departments were looking at things through an access to justice lens. Our department now includes:
-Family Law Self-Help Center Phone help-line.
-Internet and form self-help services in a variety of legal areas
-Language Access
-Jury Services
-Forms
-Dispute resolution

Our family law dispute resolution program has undergone a lot of growth in the past 18 months. We’re expanding options for families to reduce the number of cases that have to litigate based on a continuum and the needs of each family. To that end, we have
-Our Early Resolution Program that triages all new family law cases and modification motions to divert as many as possible to dispute resolution through either mediation, a settlement judge, or volunteer attorneys.
-We previously had a team of court custody investigators, and we re-shaped their department. They no longer conduct custody investigations. Because they all have a mental health background and training, they offer parenting plan dispute resolution in more complicated cases such as those with mental health or substance abuse issues in parents, developmental or mental health issues in children, or cases with domestic violence.
-These parenting plan facilitators have also been trained as coaches for Bill Eddy’s New Ways for Families High -Conflict parenting program and we’ve started a pilot program for high-conflict parents. These parents take an on-line high-conflict parenting class and our facilitators provide three free coaching sessions to help the parents practice using the tools they are learning in the on-line class.
-For our most high-conflict parents, we have a parenting coordinator program. And for low-income families who cannot afford a private parenting coordinator, we have a group of Magistrate Judges who have been trained to provide parenting coordinator services at no cost.
-For those families who end up in litigation, we offer an informal trial option to reduce the stress of trying to both tell the judge your story, and learn the rules of evidence.
