A majority of the 2019 Pacific halibut commercial fishery season will commence today at noon (local time). The season will remain open until noon (local time) on 14 November 2019. The following fisheries and areas open today: the Canadian Individual Vessel Quota (IVQ) fishery in IPHC Regulatory Area 2B, and the United States IFQ and CDQ fisheries in Areas 2C, 3A, 3B, 4A, 4B, 4C, 4D, and 4E.

As a reminder while everyone is out fishing, the IPHC has several tagging programs for P. halibut in the ocean right now! With the tags come rewards, and a chance to support the stock by collecting very important data on migration.
Pacific halibut of any size tagged with IPHC tags can be retained in any fishery. So keep a look out for those one-in-a-kind fish! For more information, please see our tagging website at http://bit.ly/2G5UhT8.

Our 1911 halibut schooner TORDENSKJOLD is part of a legendary fleet of similar boats built in the Northwest, many of which have fished Alaskan waters for over a century. The 15 or so remaining active halibut schooners are believed to constitute the world's oldest fishing fleet. TORDENSKJOLD herself last fished in 2012 before joining Northwest Seaport as a museum ship last year. The photo shows her (third from bottom) heading out on her 100th season in 2011 in company with the other Seattle-based halibut schooners.
