The summer program in Spain has come to an end 🇪🇸
Students were able to appreciate the ethnic diversity in Granada with a visit to the Muslim palace of the Alhambra, a belly dancing demonstration, and a spectacular Gypsy Flamenco show in the Sacromonte caves. They enjoyed the Oasis Mini-Hollywood theme park in the Tabernas Desert, where the highest-grossing movies in the film industry were shot. 🎥
While in Almería, we visited the Civil War shelters, which were constructed to protect the local population from Nazi’s aerial bombings during the Spanish Civil War.
Adiós España, hasta el verano próximo!! ☀️
For the past two weeks, students have explored the vibrant city of Madrid. They visited Retiro Park, tasted delicious churros con chocolate, and bargained in El Rastro flea market. We all celebrated La Roja’s victory in the Euro Cup! 🏆
As part of Dr. Cañete Quesada’s IDS 3932 Spanish Civil War in Retrospect, students watched Federico García Lorca’s play The House of Bernarda Alba, learned about the Democratic Memory Law from our guest speaker Máximo Molina, and visited the Monasteries of San Lorenzo del Escorial and Valley of Cuelgamuros, both located in the breathtaking Sierra de Guadarrama. ⛰️
Classes at Universidad Complutense are done, and we are getting ready to explore Andalusia. Stay tuned for more pics from Granada and Almería. 🌞
¡Adiós Madrid! 🇪🇸
Our faculty-led program in Madrid is kicking off! This group of 23 students–the largest group in our Spain study abroad to date–will be led by Dr. Carmen Cañete Quesada for a 6-week learning escapade. 🇪🇸
Pictured here are the students’ adventures through the spanish capital, day trips to Toledo and Segovia to see Roman aqueducts and the Alcázar castle—known as Walt Disney’s inspiration for the queens castle in Snow White. 🏰
Over the weekend, the first ever class to enter and graduate from the Wilkes Honors College reunited! 🦉
This group, along with the original faculty and staff, became the fabric of what the WHC is today—community as curriculum. 🤝

Whatever happens tomorrow, we had this day together… 🎓
Our 2024 Medallion Ceremony was full of laughter, cheers and eternal gratitude. With a record class of 119 students and over 900 watching in attendance or online, our graduates academic achievements were well-celebrated. 🏅
This class had University Scholars, Undergraduate Researchers of Year, a Fulbright Scholar Semi-Finalist and countless published works amongst them. Several of these students will now pursue MD/PhD programs, cancer research, mechanical engineering, professions in AI development, social work, psychology and much, much more. 👏
