The more that is going on around you, and in the world at large pressing upon us (and there is a lot going on, right?!), the more necessary it is for us to consciously self-regulate, so that we are not literally pulled apart by forces outside of ourselves.

Fortunately we have some very effective leverage-points for auto-regulating the state of our nervous system that are available to us 24/7. Breath, for instance, is a direct access whereby you can consciously interact with the unconscious autonomic processes of our habitual states. These states can easily and inadvertently become entrained to external forces rather than our highest intentions for ourselves. If you notice you are feeling "off," that is half the battle!

Before laying blame for that feeling on what someone else said or did, or on the larger and very real issues facing the world in any given moment, believe for an instant that in spite of all those that, you are capable of feeling better, and are more capacitated to deal with all those things, when you have directly addressed your own internal state of affairs. Then pay attention to your breath. Feel the way that at the "bottom" of your exhale, there is a quiet moment where nothing is going on at all.

That's a brief nourishing vacation from it all during which your nervous system can adjust. Then notice that with no effort at all on your part, your lungs suddenly begin to fill with no effort at all on your part as the air, that nourishing spirit, rushes in and reshapes you and moves you. Observe that flashing pause at the top of that free-fill-up when, like at the peak of a roller coaster, you are neither going up nor down, but just taking in the expansive view afforded from that place. Then feel the air rush from you, again without effort, a model for "letting go," freed from constraints internal or otherwise. This is not a "breath exercise" but rather a process of intentional self awareness in the space of the unconscious.

When we choose to walk between the worlds like that, even for just a few cycles of breath, we can shift our state.

It’s a busy week for . I’ll be subbing at the in town this morning and wednesday night. There will be a demo for the lovely Fall Festival on Saturday from 2pm-6pm and a full body class on Sunday from 12:30-1:30. So if you haven’t had a chance to MELT yet there are lots of options. What’s in the bag?

I use to tell people to use a wooden footsie roller to loosen up the plantar fascia on the bottom of their feet. As the years went by I found an assortment of tools and even used golf balls for a while. 🫣

This little hand and foot treatment kit has 4 large balls (2 soft, 2 firm) 4 small balls (2 soft, 2 firm), a bunion band and instructions. Hands down the BEST set of tools I’ve come across in my career for address ing the plantar fascia. You can find the MELT hand and foot treatments to follow along with on youtube or commit to MELT on demand and get a huge assortment of treatments using your kit or the soft MELT roller.

Our hands and feet are an IMPORTANT part of self-care & I don’t feel like they get the attention they deserve but treating them doesn’t stop there. It affects the entire body.

What sets Fascial Stretching apart? By viewing the human body as a tinsegrity model, FST practitioners begin to stretch by way of creating fascial tension using gentle exploration of movement paired with mindful breathing & gentle compression. This is not your usual 10 second linear hold stretch folks. This is a modified form of PNF that takes multiple planes of movement into account and works WITH the body to ease into increased range rather than forcing uncomfortable tension and creating resistance.
I was trained by Master Flexibility Specialists Ann & Chris Frederick. They are the authors of the books Stretch to Win & Fascial Stretch Therapy.
In Stretch to Win they break down the 10 principals for Stretching Success.
1. Synchronize your breathing with your movement.
2. Tune your nervous system to current conditions.
3. Follow in a logical anatomical order.
4. Make gains in your range of motion without pain.
5. Stretch the fascia, not just the muscle.
6. Use multiple plains of movement.
7. Target the entire joint.
8. Use traction for maximal lengthening.
9. Facilitate body reflexes for optimal results.
10. Adjust your stretching to your present goals.

If you haven’t had a chance to read these books yet, give them a try!! Of course I can’t recomend them enough. 😉 Good luck & happy Stretching!!
