Andy, an ICU patient at Menorah Medical Center - a part of HCA Midwest Health, is a big basketball fan. 🏀 His nurse, Donna, went above and beyond the call of duty by incorporating basketball in his recovery process. She brought in a mini basketball goal and basketballs to give Andy an activity to do that would also help strengthen his arms. Third-grader teacher Pat needed surgery to a treat spinal cord compression, which causes worsening function of the hands, arms and legs as well as numbness and tingling. If left untreated, it can result in paralysis. Pat felt comfortable enough with Research Medical Center Neurosurgeon Dr. Matt Pierson that he asked him for a personal favor – would he be interested in talking to his third-grade class about his upcoming surgery?

“Once we set up day and time, I asked my class if they would be interested in having my doctor come in and explain the surgery to them,” Pat says. “Being third graders, I didn't think they would be interested in this but to my surprise they unanimously said yes. They wanted to hear what Dr. Pierson was going to do to Coach Pat.”

The HCA Midwest Health Black Colleague Network (BCN) volunteered at the 13th annual JuneteenthKC Festival. More than 20,000 attendees were estimated at the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District. Colleagues gave away Browndages, the inclusive bandage for all skin complexions, with other self-care goodies. The booth also shared information on heart health, stroke prevention and nursing education pathways. The BCN offered additional support to Kansas City’s Juneteenth staff serving as medical volunteers in the EMT tent.

In June, we were thrilled to select J.R. Rehmann as our Leader of the Month.
