Hope everyone has a happy and safe Labor Day! Here are a few tips to help keep your pets safe this holiday!

Guard the grill:
Keep pets away from the grill, grill tools, lighter fluid, and matches in order to avoid burns and hazardous chemical ingestion.

Protect your plate:
Many foods we enjoy on Labor Day such as corn on the cob, grapes, onion, chocolate, and alcohol can be toxic to pets or a choking hazards.

Beat the heat:
Dogs are susceptible to heat stroke. Make sure there is plenty of water and shade for your canine companions to stay cool.

Forego the fireworks:
Not only can fireworks spook pets, but they can also cause severe burns. Make sure you have a safe and quiet area where they can go to feel safe.

Everyone wants their pets to stay safe and sometimes getting overheated happens faster than you think. There are many ways we can keep our pets safe on those extra hot days this summer. Here’s a few tips! Taking shorter walks in the cooler parts of the day is one way to keep your pets cool. Another is to make sure they are staying hydrated. In the heat it is much easier to get dehydrated, especially if they aren’t keeping up on their water intake. If possible you can keep your pets indoors on those extremely hot days and never leave your pets in the car. Even when weather isn’t severe, cars can overheat quickly leading to deadly temperatures this can be life threatening to our furry friends. A few signs of heat stress for you to keep an eye out for include: abnormal tongue/gum color, restlessness, anxiousness, excessive drooling/panting, and unsteadiness. Just remember to stay safe and stay cool!

Wow! Where did this year go? It’s already July and with July comes sparks! 🎆 Here are a few tips to keep our pets safe this holiday. Many animals are scared and easily startled, so it’s best to keep them indoors in a safe space. While some pets are scared others can be curious let’s make sure to keep them away from sparklers, glow sticks, fireworks, charcoal, and kabob skewers. Just as a reminder the clinic is closed now through the 4th of July. We will reopen on Friday, July 5th for calls and purchases with appointments resuming Monday morning. Have a safe and Happy 4th!

Everyday pets go missing, you see flyers up for missing pets everywhere. Right now it’s someone else’s pet but it could be yours next, so let’s talk about National microchipping month. National microchipping month brings awareness to the benefits of getting your pets microchipped such higher chances of being reunited with your pet and piece of mind. A small electrical chip called a microchip is inserted under the skin. This microchip gives an identification number when scanned that is linked specifically to your pet when registered. The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and the needle used to insert it is only a little larger than a regular needle used for injections. Microchips can be placed in the office and require no anesthesia. Make sure if your pet goes missing you never have to feel that feeling of possibly never seeing them again. If you have questions or would like to schedule your microchip appointment give us a call at (816)453-2154.

Breathe in that fresh air, listen to the wind, and absorb some warm sun rays because today is Earth Day! 🌎 What a beautiful day to enjoy our planet! Here are a few ways you can participate. If you see some trash on the ground pick it up, not only is it bad for the planet but it could be bad for our pets as well if they were to ingest it. Another way you could participate is by planting some plants or a tree, plants and trees are good for creating oxygen for us to breathe and could be a fun way to enjoy the outdoors. Lastly you could take your pets out to play or for a walk, what better way to celebrate Earth Day than to enjoy all the earth has to offer including our fur babies! Have a purrrfect Earth Day!

First, you get your annual heartworm test to make sure they don’t have Heartworms. Hoppy Easter! Easter is an egg-citing holiday! Have you given your animal companions their Easter baskets yet? If not there is still time! We all want to keep our babies safe on this colorful holiday so here are a few tips. Although Easter egg hunts can be fun for both kids and pets, it’s a good idea to keep pets away from them. Pets can ingest the plastic eggs which can lead to internal blockage and they are also choking hazards. Easter is a nice time for those beautiful lilies, but they are extremely toxic to cats. Even just a small amount can be fatal, so if you have them keep them out of your cat’s reach. Keep all candies and chocolates out of your pets reach, chocolate is toxic to pets and other candies can be choking hazards. Let’s all have a safe and fun filled holiday!

March 28th has been chosen for Respect your cat day. You’re probably thinking we should love and respect our cats everyday but this day is very special to our feline friends. Although today cats are primarily companion animals they have a very interesting history. From being worshipped by ancient Egyptians, assisting in keeping pests down in the trenches of WWI, and now our furry friends. The history gives us great reason to spoil them a little extra with some new toys and some treats. A few ideas to show them some extra love is respecting their hunter instinct & their need to scratch by getting them a new feather toy or scratching post to satisfy these instinctive behaviors. A couple other ways to participate is to respect their desire for human interaction, your cat’s health, and snooze time. Not all cats enjoy snuggles and scratches but if they do, give them some extra love for their special day. Keeping their health in mind by getting them to the vet for their annual wellness exam and vaccinations is a great way to show you care. Lastly a cat’s sleep is very important to them, as they need more sleep than we do and their predator instincts to hunt then rest and conserve energy. If you see them snoozing respect their natural habits and love on them when they wake up. Enjoy Respect your cat day and get some snuggles!

Signs of poisoning may include any of the following: vomiting, diarrhea, collapse, lack of coordination, unusual behavior, excessive drooling, or weakness/lethargy. Below is an image with the top 10 pet toxins of 2023. There are so many potential hazards for our animal companions. Brrr! Is it cold out?! Just like in warm weather, the cold weather can pose risks to our pets. Here are some tips to help keep our animal friends safe during such cold times. Keep an eye on those paws, keeping the fur trimmed on the feet can help prevent ice/snow accumulation between toes. After walks wipe down their belly, legs, and feet. The de-icing products can be toxic to our pets, consider using pet safe de-icers on your property and neighborhood. Keep away from frozen water, you never know if the ice will support their weight and a fall through the ice could be deadly. Keep pets inside, just like us they are susceptible to hypothermia and frostbite. Animals should never be left out for long periods of time in below freezing weather. During these cold times shorter walks are a good idea, when going on walks keep in mind your pets breed and age because this can play a factor in their limits. Make some racket! Although deadly during cold weather, outdoor and feral cats can find the heat of your engine comforting. By honking your horn, banging on the hood, and checking under your car you could potentially save their lives. These are just a few cold weather safety tips to help keep your pets safe this season, stay warm and have a good day!!

National Pit Bull Awareness Day is for all those people who own a pit bull and to share recognition and education to promote positive perception of how sweet and lovable these pups can be. Over the years these furry friends have gotten a bad wrap, let’s change that and show some love. This day is dedicated to improving public view of the American Pit Bull Terrier. By sharing positive stories and experiences you can literally save lives by keeping them out shelters due to bias and fear that come from negative based stories. National Pit Bull Awareness Day falls on the last Saturday of October unless it is Halloween then it is moved. If you own a Pit Bull add a picture of your fur babies with us, show the love!
