The band played two free chamber concerts at the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library Saturday.

Included in that concert was the world premiere of Lee Hartman’s “Variations On Democracy”!

Special thanks to Abbie Brown for conducting and Paige Flenniken for lending her beautiful soprano to the piece!

Also thank you to Debra Leiter for leading two wonderful panels on democracy before the performances.

See us at our next concert in October! https://freedomband.com/events/ghost-stories

Vincent Persichetti to Fennell: "I guess when strings do not enter into such a combination one calls the medium "band." The word "band" has always sounded good to me. Of course when a musically ill conductor waves at rusty clarinets and consumptive flutes and loose-valved trumpets, who are playing bloated versions of orchestral music in micro-tones--and the benches are gum-coated-- one "hears" a bad medium. However, a sickly string-quartet playing a padded arrangement of a piano sonata sounds even worse. So let us respect the medium "band" or "wind ensemble"---God Bless you for the term---and your musical generosity, skill, talent and love." V.P. [June 13, 1980]
