Are you registered to vote? Less than 45% of eligible voters are registered here in KC! MRC will soon partner with Mayor Pro Tem Ryana Parks-Shaw’s “Vote Your Voice KC” program to increase access to voter registration information. You will be able to register to vote or check your voter registration status at Mattie Rhodes Center’s Northeast location at 148 North Topping Ave., KCMO 64123, as well as all Kansas City Community Centers. In 2022, Kansas City had approximately 225,186 registered voters out of nearly 510,000 eligible voters, highlighting an urgent need for increased engagement and outreach within the Kansas City community.

Last Thursday we held our Annual Back to School Rally in the historic Northeast!
With close to 600 people in attendance, this shows the great need for back-to-school essentials in Kansas City! 🖍📓🍎
Thankfully, we had over 300 backpacks filled with supplies to help as many families as possible. Eye exams, sports physicals, and free haircuts were available as well. We were able to help many families feel more confident going into this school year!

Mattie Rhodes Center turns out for National Night Out. Residents gathered at 1524 White Ave. (McCoy Park) Tuesday evening for the annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. This year’s event was sponsored by District 4, City Councilman Crispin Rea, and Councilman Eric Bunch.

Due to unforeseen circumstances we are unable to offer immunizations this year, this a service we have offered for many years. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and we plan to have this available next year. We will have information on how to set up immunizations with the KCMO Health Department!

We will have free haircuts, free school supplies, uniform raffle, snacks, and of course resources and other services from our community partners! 🎒🖍

Don't forget, our Back-to-School Drive is this Friday! The event is FREE and open to everyone in the community. Join us for an afternoon of community, support, and preparation for the new school year! 📚🍎✏️

Free stylish backpacks, school supplies with a variety of necessary items to help students succeed in their studies, and free haircuts by professional barbers and stylists. Plus, don't forget about the delicious food and vendors for both families and students to enjoy!

We are pleased to share that Mattie Rhodes Cultural Center has been honored with a Merit Award in the Cultural Building category by ARCHITECT Magazine!

"For ARCHITECT’s 2024 Architecture & Interiors Awards, the third year of the annual program, jurors spent hours reviewing nearly 200 submissions from firms around the world. The resulting class of 34 winners—11 Honor winners and 23 Merit winners—represents a diverse range of commercial architecture and interior design projects showcasing innovation and ingenuity in all its forms."

The new facility sits in the heart of Kansas City’s Westside Neighborhood, an area undergoing gentrification. As Kansas City’s oldest social service agency, it is dedicated to the well-being of individuals and families through social services, behavioral health counseling, and the arts. The project primarily serves Hispanic and Latinx communities, hosting the client’s cultural programming, which includes arts education, public events, and the curation of the Hand-in-Hand Folk Art collection.

In honor of Mattie Florence Rhodes' birthday month we celebrate 153 years. She was a teenager who worked for the less fortunate with a group of her friends. At only 19 years of age, Mattie died of typhoid fever, leaving $500.00 behind to continue the work she started. Her wish and legacy has been carried on for over 130 years. Mattie Rhodes Center is more than just an agency. It is the past, present, and future of people helping people.
