This week's DEI post will be a recap of our latest DEI meeting. Just last Friday we held our 2nd department-wide Dance DEI meeting and the turnout was beautiful! We openly discussed the difference between equity and equality making ourselves aware that equality says everyone has the same opportunity while equity involves investing in people and valuing people in a way that makes sure those opportunities are accessible. We shared various short-term and long-term goals for the Department of Dance including establishing a unified Land Acknowledgment, DEI training for faculty, staff, and students, more representation in the department, and decolonizing the curriculum - just to name a few. Finally, we brainstormed ways in which we can fundraise $8000 for the People's Institute, a 3-day learning experience that provides training for faculty & staff with regards to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The ideas were never-ending and very interesting! Overall this open conversation was a great time to connect with familiar and new faces. We appreciate the presence of each person in attendance! Stay tuned for the next DEI Meeting...as always, ALL are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Every Friday the newly Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee of KSU Dance will be bringing you events, opportunities, resources, tips, and more to kick off your weekend! First up?! Two incredible performances that honor and celebrate the African Diaspora as well as marginalized and indigenous communities. LIFT EVERY VOICE: A multidisciplinary collaboration with Dr. Theresa Howard, John Lawless, & the percussion ensemble. There will be singing, live music, and you bet…DANCE! Don’t miss it –– Saturday February 19 at 8PM at Morgan Hall.
