Pay attention to guilt trips. People may manipulate you by painting you as cold, ungrateful, or other unflattering things, and then imply that the only way to show you aren't is to do whatever they want. Thus, you fall into the trap of either being "bad" or being completely obedient. Or they may start a self-pitying speech, expecting you to comfort them and agree to do what they want.
