I'm a big believer in protecting Washington's legacy forests. They are huge in our collective effort to mitigate the impact of climate change. We need these forests because they:

1) Sequester carbon.

Because older trees have larger trunks, more extensive root systems, and are typically surrounded by mature vegetation (including moss and fungus), they store more carbon than younger, smaller trees, maintaining a significant carbon sink, which stops the release of stored carbon into the atmosphere.

2) Support biodiversity, providing for a more resilient ecosystem due to the diverse number of plant and animal species.

Biodiversity helps with pollination and pest control, which can indirectly contribute to climate change mitigation.

3) Have canopies that reflect sunlight into space.

This helps regulate local and global temperatures through the Albedo Effect. This may offset some of the warming effects of climate change.

4) Help regulate water cycles, including a consistent water flow in rivers and streams, which reduces the risk of floods and droughts, and contributes to groundwater recharge.

5) Preserve genetic diversity.

Plant and tree species in legacy forests contain rare genetic material that can be used to develop resilient and climate-adapted tree species in the future.

✨ BIG NEWS to share! ✨

I'm so excited to share with you all that I am running to be Washington's next Commissioner of Public Lands!!

You all have been my biggest supporters through so many chapters in my life, and I am thrilled to embark on the biggest one so far: leading the state's Department of Natural Resources to manage over 5 million acres of public lands. As the head of this department, I will ensure we are using our state lands to fight climate change, protect our state's natural heritage for future generations, and modernize state lands to ensure working forests provide a viable economy now and into the future.

After much consideration, I have decided not to seek re-election for the Washington State Senate. From national leadership on environment and climate, to critical progress on justice and equity, I am extremely proud of the work I have accomplished. I am excited to continue working to advance progressive ideas while empowering and inspiring more people of color into leadership through other avenues in my future.

However, after spending time with my family this past week and after many reflective conversations, it has become clear that my family responsibility and financial obligations make it impossible for me to seek re-election. I simply am not spending the time with my family that I must. I also find it hard to meet my financial obligations on my State Senator salary.

While I am not done creating positive change for our communities and will continue to work tirelessly to make a difference, I will do it in other ways going forward. I am proud of our historic wins, leading the nation in eliminating single use plastics and styrofoam, working to create a circular economy, the work we’ve done to begin tackling our affordable housing crisis, and supporting our district's economic vitality. Most of all, I am proud of the work we have accomplished to lift the voices of those who have been traditionally marginalized. Together, we have raised our voices and challenged the institutional norms of government....and, we have made a difference!

I look forward to representing you for the remainder of my term and sharing my future service and opportunities with you later.

Thank you for the incredible support and trust over the last four years! We have accomplished so much together!!

Serving you, has been the honor of a lifetime! 🙌🏽

‼️‼️B I G Announcement‼️‼️

It has been such an honor to serve as the State Senator for the 47th Legislative District. We have made much needed progress on expanding affordable housing, increasing access to health care, protecting the environment, investing in transportation and COVID-19 relief, supporting small businesses, and so much more. That said, I feel like we are just getting started.

That's why I'm so excited to announce today that I'm running for re-election in 2022!

My public service is centered around lifting up the voices of people who are not heard at the tables where decisions are made. I know that powerful interests will come after me this year for standing up to them. But that's where you come in. We can keep fighting together. We can keep pushing for more diversity, more inclusion, more equity at every step of the political process. I can't wait to represent the 47th in the State Senate in January. I can't wait to get out on the campaign trail in the spring, summer and fall. Thank you so much to all of you who have supported my work and my campaign! Let's do this!

With the momentum of a highly successful legislative session, I am getting a head start on my first re-election campaign in 2022! My seat is a TOP target for Republicans, and I am prepared to bring that legendary !

During my first term in the State Senate, I was hard at work fighting for BIPOC folks, frontline workers, families affected by the pandemic, and more. This past legislative session 6 of my bills were successfully signed into law! Here is a summary of 3:
✅ SB 5135 - allow for civil litigation in racially motivated 911 calls to address police calls on People of Color that are too often rooted in racism rather than public safety.
✅ SB 5287 - expand incentives to build more affordable housing, which will address the housing crisis in this state.
✅ SB 5022 - increase the use of recycled materials, restrict harmful polystyrene/Styrofoam products, and require that plastic utensils are only provided upon request to address our growing waste management challenges and protect our state from the climate crisis.

My work in Olympia is not finished, and I am committed to keep fighting for my district and Washingtonians! Let’s get to work!

Vote EXTRA early by mail or find a Dropbox! Thank you King County Elections for all your hard work to make sure EVERY ballot is counted and EVERY voice is heard! 🙌🏽

Our 70th drop box was installed today at South Seattle College! Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve been getting some questions about drop boxes. Here’s some info we hope will be helpful as we look ahead to the General --

- All drop boxes will open on Oct 15. Ballots are mailed on Oct 14 & you should receive it by Oct 19. If you don’t, call us at 206-296-VOTE (8683).

- Drop boxes are emptied daily during the voting period by KCE staff, in teams of 2. Extra pick ups also happen on Mon/Tues of Election Week as boxes get busier. Ballots are securely transported back to KCE HQ for processing.

- Drop boxes are a secure way to get your ballot right back into the hands of King Co Elections. You do not need to come to a Vote Center in person unless you need to get registered or need other assistance. If you must come in person, wear a mask please.

- The earlier you return your ballot, the better. That applies to both mail and drop boxes. Boxes can get lines in the last days if you all wait. Don’t wait to return your ballot. Don’t wait in line. Easy peasy.

- Drop boxes close at 8 pm sharp on Election Night. That’s 8:00:00. Not 8 pm + 1 second. Definitely not 8:02 pm. For heaven’s sake, not 8:10 pm. Don’t gamble with your vote by waiting til the last minute. Get it done early and avoid the last-minute rush.

- There is a drop box within a 3-mile radius of 96% of King County voters. That’s you. There’s likely a drop box within 3 miles of you. Check out the full list and make a plan today to get your ballot in early. https://www.kingcounty.gov/depts/elections/how-to-vote/ballots/returning-my-ballot/ballot-drop-boxes.aspx

This is the last mailer from the Fain campaign. As candidates, we approve all our mailers. His choice to leave my picture blank speaks volumes about his thoughts on women and people of color.

This campaign is about putting more people at the table. It is about listening. It is about inclusion. We have two days left. We can ensure our state legislature respects women, lifts up ALL people, and includes more voices in the decision making process.

This was OUR latest ad in which we amplify community, diversity and inclusion: https://www.facebook.com/130830400835219/posts/324816248103299/

This is why conversations belly to belly, eyeball to eyeball are SO important! Last night I met Patrick, according to our info, he leans Republican. You can see from his body language that he was skeptical and cautious. He did come outside to talk to me, so I knew he was curious and invested. We had a REAL conversation about taxes, the soda and energy drink tax (it’s NOT a grocery tax), car tabs, Sound Transit and pretty much all things taxes. He told me he doesn’t mind paying his fair share, he wants to see accountability. He was tired of politicians who are not held accountable. I told him about the 6 women running for the State Senate that are mostly new to politics and the reason we were running and his eyes lit up. At the end of the conversation, I shook his hand and thanked him for a great chat. I told him I was a hugger, he surprised me and said he was too. We hugged goodbye. I asked him for his vote and walked away smiling, knowing that I had just a conversation we would both remember. On all our literature, I add my cell phone number. I told him once I’m elected, he can call me anytime before 9pm and hold me accountable. This is how we change things, belly to belly, eye ball to eye ball. Our campaign has knocked on over 30,000 doors and I have knocked on almost 8,000 personally. It is true democracy in action. I’m grateful for this work! 🚪🤛🏽💙🌊🇺🇸
