The Opal Fund

501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization providing Grants for MRIs to help diagnose Neurological Disorders in pets.

12/03/2021

Can You Help?
In the last year, The Opal Fund has helped pay for 4 life saving MRIs! MRI scans are an incredible tool in a Veterinarian's arsenal. Unfortunately, the cost of an MRI scan often far exceeds the cost of treatment, and many families and rescues simply can not afford this life saving scan without putting themselves deep into debt. The Opal Fund is committed to making MRIs more accessible to the families of pets suffering from Neurological Disorders, by providing grants to cover the cost of these scans, leading to an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
These scans can cost as much as $5,000 a piece and our funds are currently drained. Please consider making a donation so we can continue to save Pets suffering from Neurological Disorders. Thank you so much for your support. If you wish to donate or learn more, the link is below!
The Opal Fund is a 501(C)(3) Charitable Organization and all donations are tax deductible.

🟣Meet Dozer!🟣 Dozer has been suffering frequent partial seizures and his mom reached out to The Opal Fund when she ran out of funds necessary to help him. The Opal Fund provided two grants to Dozer and his family to help him continue his happy healthy life.

Thanks to our generous Donors, Dozer was able to receive a comprehensive work up from a facility that specializes in Neurological Disorders and now has a treatment plan in place to help keep his seizures controlled. His prognosis is good and it’s all thanks to our generous supporters. Since starting his treatment, Dozer has not suffered ANY seizures. Paws crossed for his continued success!

ICYMI - Harper was the first ever recipient of an Opal Fund grant. Harper underwent a successful surgery to repair a significant injury in her neck. She has since made a full recovery - this video was from early October! We love you Harper! Many more happy days and peanut butter filled kongs await you. 💜💜💜

Repost from

Harper update! our girl is up and acting like herself again! On Friday she got all 28 staples removed and is showing zero signs of infection or deficits!

She’s still on “bed rest” as much as we can try to give her for the next 3-4 weeks, but she’s clearly feeling WORLDS better.

She is, however, itchy as hell. So mom’s pop culture knowledge and dad’s engineering skills have led to an effective and hilarious solution: fuzzy socks taped on (obviously not on her fur directly) . It lets her itch, but her nails can’t tear her back up - here’s a video from last week right after we tried on her “special socks” for the first time 😉 swipe to see our inspiration. We have since moved onto Velcro tabs for easy removal before walks.

Thank you all so much for your support and generosity. We are Eternally and wholly grateful to all of you for helping us give her the care she needs❤️

We are so excited to announce The Opal Fund is officially a 501(c)(3)!

Ready for something crazy? The IRS determined our effective date of exemption as February 22, 2020. The day Opal left this earth. A sign from our little girl? I think so. 💜

Timeline photos 03/23/2020

We’ve currently delayed all fundraising efforts. We understand many of you are faced with much uncertainty and we want to allow our community time to heal. If you are still able to give, donations can still be made through our website and through the mail.

At this time we’ve also delayed the opening of our Grant Applications until 6/1/2020.

In the meantime, we will be working behind the scenes, expanding our educational resources for pet owners over at www.OpalFund.org

Wishing you and yours health and happiness.

We’ve compiled an easy to understand comprehensive Seizure Guide to help you navigate this new chapter in your pets life. Updated frequently with more resources and information - all indexed for easy searching. No downloads. No fees. Just visit our website whenever you have a question or want to learn more.

When Opal’s first seizure hit, we found ourselves in a panic searching google for resources at 2am - what do we do? Is she acting normal? Does she need to go to the hospital? It took visiting almost every page about canine epilepsy to answer all our questions - we want to change that.

Because 2am can feel really lonely, we’re here for you.

The Night We Met

February 21, 2019.
We (John and Jaime) were volunteering for the Monmouth County SPCA , tasked with transporting over 20 dogs from Project Safe Pet in South Carolina, to New Jersey where they would be placed for adoption. We loaded up the transport truck and hit the road to South Carolina at 1:30 am.

February 22, 2019 7:00pm
We made it to the "Pick Up" location, a parking lot outside of Carowinds in South Carolina. Project Safe Pet's focus was pulling dogs like Opal from high kill shelters, and placing them in foster homes until relocation was available. So we got to meet all the wonderful foster families as they handed us their beautiful pups, trusting we would get them home safely..

Why so expensive? A 3 Tesla MRI with a new MRI suite may run a Veterinary Hospital $3.5 Million. At the average $3000 per scan, it would take 1,167 scans (at 30-60 minutes a scan) to pay off the machine - that number does not including the cost of Staff, sedation, and paramagnetic contrast fluid.
