Jewelry care tip: A common misconception that I run into quite a bit as a bench jeweler is when people believe that if your jewelry is "real" ( precious metals like gold and silver), it is safe to wear when swimming. The one thing that breaks my heart is working on an expensive or sentimental piece and running into brittleness and cracking. Prolonged exposure to the chlorine in swimming pools is the root cause of this. The chlorine breaks down the alloys. Even the salt in ocean water can cause erosion in the metals over time. I just wanted to share this in hoping it helps save your jewelry in the future. Even though your neck might not be "turning green" or the jewelry isn't losing its luster, it could still be causing underlying damage that is irreversible. It's one of the hardest things to share with a customer who is attempting to get a repair or sizing done. In some cases repairs are still possible, but not always. 🙏🏼
As Jewelers we recommend getting a clean and check done every 3 to 6 months. This could save you in the long run.
