Uplift's new series of seminars is here‼️
This year, we are planning on hosting more seminars than we have in the past. The first series will happen on 2/24and 3/23 at Kingston Athletics at 1 PM. These are consecutive, so the best way to experience it is to do one after the next, but if you can only come to 1 that is fine as we will recap the first seminar in the second of the series.
Topic: Building a Strong Squat
These seminars will be focused on barbell squatting (High bar and Low bar). We will talk about injury risk management with the squat, common mechanisms of injury when squatting, technique, warmups/drills to help you squat, as well as variations/accessories that can help you work around/with pain, get the movement stronger, etc.
We will also spend some time applying everything! In the first seminar, we will try out the technique we learned and get comfortable under the bar. In the second seminar we will, under guidance, put theory into practice and try out what we learned under a barbell with some load.
If you have squat shoes (shoes with a heel wedge) feel free to bring them and any other equipment you may want (knee sleeves, belt, wrist wraps, etc.).
If you're a member of Kingston Athletics OR Relentless Strength, please take advantage of the discount by choosing the option that says KA/RS members. If you know you can come to both, buy the package option to save some cash! You can also show up the day of and pay then.
We are looking forward to seeing you there!
*DISCLAIMER*This seminar isn't meant to fix any current pain you may be having. As a massage therapist I get the unique experience to be able to have a very hands on approach with people, and more specifically, people in pain. While palpation isn't the end all be all of assessments, it can provide very useful information about the general state of whomever is on the table.
Often times when people come in with pretty substantial pain, everything is aggravated. Essentially, the wind could blow the wrong way and could make their pain worsen (an exaggeration, but you get the point). Often times these people have a lot of built up muscular tension, or hypertonicity. While this hypertonicity may or may not be contributing to their symptoms, it is a good indication to the general state the person is in. Healthy tissue should feel pliable and should form to pressure in a way. And often times, if a muscle on one side of the body feels "healthy" and the same one on the other side is sensitive to touch, has very taut, etc., that could be a good place to start to wonder "is this involved in any way".
For those who are in a lot of pain and have global tension, my primary goal is to typically dampen down their nervous system into a more of a parasympathetic state or a "rest and digest" state. I will attempt to achieve this through soft tissue work, along with positional movements typically on the floor so they have a lot of external stability and reference points, coupled with conscious breathing (long exhales) and cueing, to help bring them into a rested state. If able to, in that same session I will give them some exposure into the range of motion that was initially painful, and see how it is tolerated. Often times they can get more into that range with minimal to no discomfort.
The goals: Get them to feel better and be hopeful. Be kind and encouraging. And let them know that they have more control than they think.
Be proactive. Come in for a session. We have openings for Wednesday and Thursday.
Book while there are spots open!
Get yourself a clinician who is also a coach!
You can't out massage motor patterns, but massage helps set the stage for motor learning, especially if there is a heightened nervous system, pain, soft tissue restrictions, etc.
Don't delay taking care of yourself
Oftentimes being proactive and diligent about taking care of your body can manage the risk of injury, stress overflow, and a buildup of fatigue that makes you feel run down. Recognize discomfort. Recognize signs of fatigue. Recognize when stress is high. Once you are aware you can take the steps to handle it.
We're here to be apart of those steps! Come in for a proactive session, not a reactive one.
The ability of your ribcage to expand, compress, flex, extend, rotate, and side bend is an integral part of every day movement, as well as maintaining shoulder, back, neck, and hip health.
Your core (a group of muscles that attach onto the ribs and help to stabilize your spine, transfer force, manage breath, and manage intra abdominal pressure) is a hub of force transfer. One reason why soft tissue work on the back-core musculature often feels relieving and typically results in a lot of symptom relief is because it can help manage tone and tissue glide of this highly active area.
Often times, especially when there are control/ROM deficits through the spine and ribs, these musculature can become hypertonic, giving a sensation of stiffness, difficulty in movement, and even cause difficulty breathing.
Moving consciously, utilizing your breath, moving in different planes, couples with soft tissue work can help you alleviate these sensations and feeling brand new.

💡Just because you have pain that doesn't mean that there is any tissue damage in the area 💡
🚨Pain is an alarm system for you body that is there to protect you. Sometimes it does a great job (pulling your hand off of a fire so you don't get burned), and sometimes it is hypersensitive and not as helpful (having pain re occur from an old injury that has long healed).
When dealing with pain it is important to:
1) Recognize your relationship with pain and how that affects you. Pain doesn’t necessarily mean anything is injured
2) Decrease your brains sensitivity to the painful stimulus through graded movement
3) Become confident in your body and strong in those positions that used to cause you pain
If you're dealing with chronic pain that won't go away, come in for a few sessions so we can help you become confident in your movement again!
Being Proactive Vs. Reactive
Oftentimes the best way to manage pain is to be proactive about it. People will often notice small aches, pains, or discomforts from training or daily life that come and go as the days go by.
Typically these are short lived and won't amount to much, but sometimes, especially if it comes on often, it may turn into something a bit more painful or debilitating, especially if they negatively impact your movement quality.
One way to help stave off anything more serious happening is to go to a qualified professional, get assessed, and see if there are any modalities or movements that can be given to you to help improve movement quality and comfort, manage tissues tonicity, and decrease any pain or discomfort associated with what you are experiencing.
If this sounds like something you often experience, come in for some sessions! We are here to help you!

💡Clients who get the best results see us most consistently💡
While having a session here or there can be helpful, what is going to produce the best results is consistent care. Adherence to a plan of care ensures that we can track progress, adapt the plan as needed as you go through the healing process, and ensure that the correctives you get or the action items we want you to do are getting done correctly.
🔵
Just like anything else, consistent effort and attention are needed to make long term progressions. Regular massage will have longer term adaptations than doing a session every 5 weeks. Getting coached through your correctives more regularly, as well as doing them on your own, will solidify the adaptations that we are looking to achieve.
🔵
If you're serious about getting in front of your pain and stress, check out our packages. They're the best way to have the most success in getting to manage your pain and improve your performance.
