Exciting News! Nate has been promoted to Manager!
Nate has been with us since our opening in 2021 and has become an essential part of our team. As we continue to grow, we are thrilled to officially promote him to the role of Manager. Originally from Oklahoma, Nate moved here in 2020 and is married to his best friend, Alanah, who is pursuing her master’s in psychology at Johnson! He also enjoys playing various instruments, with a special passion for the piano.
Nate is particularly excited about stepping into this new role and being part of the growth that Commonplace has experienced and where we are headed.
Please join us in congratulating Nate!

HELLO FALL 🍂
After lots of thought and a predicted break in the forecast tomorrow we have decided to move forward with hello fall!
We are so excited for all the fall fun to be had and we hope to see you there!
To patrons of CommonPlace, “Hey Brother” is drip coffee served in a styrofoam cup. This fairly plain drink, however, gets its name from a man who was anything but.
“Hey, Brother” was the standard greeting used by Lloyd Powell, a man who grew up in South Knoxville, attending New Hopewell Elementary, South High School, and Fort Hill Baptist Church. After graduating from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Lloyd taught at West High School and then served at Camp BaYoCa in Wears Valley for 45 years until his passing in 2009.
Eli Cockrum, owner of CommonPlace, attended Camp BaYoCa as a child and served on its staff during high school and college, where Lloyd was not only his boss but a significant mentor who impacted his life deeply. In 2005, they became family when Eli married Lloyd’s middle daughter, Heather.
Lloyd was an avid coffee drinker, preferring his steaming brew served simply: black and in a styrofoam cup. So CommonPlace offers this drink in remembrance of him, a South Knoxvillian by birth who loved deeply, served passionately, and greeted others like family.
Love for others. Service with passion. Treating others like family. We hope these qualities also shine through in our business values as well. Come on in to see us. We’d love to say, “Hey.”
