βThe rich inheritance of justice, liberty, prosperity, and independence bequeathed by your fathers is shared by you, not by me...This Fourth of July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn...What, to the American slave, is your Fourth of July?β - Frederick Douglass, 1852
In July of 1852, Frederick Douglass delivered his hard-hitting Independence Day speech, βWhat to the Slave is the Fourth of July?β

On this day in 1964...
the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed into law.
The passage of the act helped to provide federal job opportunities for African Americans, strengthened voting laws, loosened racial restrictions on the use of public facilities, and limited the federal funding of discriminatory aid programs.

Decoration Day...we remember our fallen
, also known as Decoration Day, is an annual holiday where our nation pauses to honor the service and sacrifice of military heroes who gave their lives for our freedoms.
The first noted commemoration of fallen soldiers was organized by freed slaves on May 1, 1865 in Charleston, S.C. It was held on a former plantersβ racetrack where Confederates held captured Union soldiers during the last year of the Civil War.
The roughly 250 prisoners who died in the attack had been buried in unmarked graves, so Black residents of Charleston gave them a proper burial. Memorial Day became recognized as an official federal holiday in 1871.
Frederick Douglass delivered a speech at Arlington National Cemetery as part of the first official Decoration Day commemoration. He emphasized the importance of honoring those who sacrificed their lives, stating: βdark and sad will be the hour to this nation when it forgets to pay grateful homage to its greatest benefactors.β

Black leaders discuss church future Speakers at the 55th General Meeting of Black Methodists for Church Renewal were leery of what a possible splintering of The United Methodist Church will mean for Black churches, based partially on the results of past mergers and splits.
Congratulations to Austin-East Roadrunners Class of 22!!
