This study explores the impact of integrating acupuncture with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRHa) agonists, like Lupron, on improving endometrial receptivity and pregnancy outcomes for patients experiencing recurrent implantation failure (RIF) during IVF-ET procedures.

They compared standard treatment (conventional hormone replacement therapy) to GnRHa and acupuncture combined with the standard treatment.

They tracked endometrial thickness, endometrial morphological classification, submucosal uterine blood flow classification, clinical pregnancy rate, embryo implantation rate and early miscarriage rate for both groups.

Key findings of the study include:

🔬Enhanced Endometrial Receptivity: The combination therapy significantly improved the receptivity of the endometrium, making it more conducive for embryo implantation.

🔬Improved Pregnancy Outcomes: Patients receiving both acupuncture and GnRH agonists showed higher pregnancy rates compared to those who did not receive the combined treatment.

🔬Mechanism: The synergistic effect of acupuncture and GnRH agonists is suggested to optimize hormonal balance and uterine environment, thus aiding successful implantation.

🔬Improved uterine blood flow: The combination therapy increased the number of women with Type III submucosal uterine blood flow and decreased the number of women with Type I submucosal uterine blood flow.

Type I submucosal blood flow is characterized by high-resistance and low-volume blood flow. This type of blood flow is typically less favorable for implantation and pregnancy outcomes.

Type III submucosal uterine blood flow exhibits low-resistance and high-volume blood flow. This type is considered more favorable for implantation and successful pregnancy. Low-resistance and high-volume blood flow in the submucosa indicate a well-vascularized endometrium, which enhances the chances of embryo implantation and subsequent pregnancy.

The combination therapy aims to optimize these blood flow parameters, thereby improving overall endometrial receptivity and potentially leading to higher pregnancy rates in patients with recurrent implantation failure during IVF-ET treatments.

The study highlights the potential benefits of integrative approaches in reproductive medicine, offering hope for patients struggling with RIF during frozen embryo transfer cycles.

At the clinic, we often discuss the impacts that infertility can have beyond the day to day testing, cycles, and medication. One thing that often comes up is its impact on a couple's marriage.

In an ideal world, infertility would bring the couple together, help them grow together and make their relationship stronger (of course, this doesn't make infertility worth it....), but it can often have unexpected impacts.

Many women express a variety of sentiments and we wanted to touch on this to bring light and awareness to this common experience.

Some women wonder if their partners want a child as much as them because their partners aren't as vocal about their emotions. Male partners often don't want to add their grief/sadness to their partners and will hold it in as a means of protecting them.

It can often be hard to talk about infertility. It brings up lots of big questions like: "will they want to be married to me if we can't have a child?" or "I'm not sure I can go through treatment much longer, I hope my partner is ok with that, I don't want to let them down."

Sometimes there is resentment because the treatment of infertility falls mostly on the female partner even in cases of male factor infertility.

Sometimes there is guilt, sometimes there is fear, sometime there is anger.

We want you all to know that this is normal. Infertility is often one of the first hard things a marriage goes through. Most couples will talk about their plans (including children), decide to get married and often work on starting a family soon after marriage (though not always, of course!). If this first goal of a couple feels out of reach, it can rock a marriage that doesn't have years of experience navigating the ups and downs of life and make the journey that much harder than it already is.

I encourage all couples to seek out a couples' therapist experienced in infertility to help couples learn how to communicate about these deep issues in a way that can bring connection and understanding. No one is equipped to talk about this, so learning the skills can make this process a bit easier.

WHAT IS PRE-BIRTH ACUPUNCTURE

Pre-Birth Acupuncture is a series of 4-5 weekly treatments beginning at week 36 of your pregnancy that are designed to help your body go into labor on time and to labor to progress normally and without complication once it begins. Most describe acupuncture as virtually painless and not like what they were expecting. The needles we use are very thin and most report no pain on insertion. Once the needles are in, most feel nothing, but it is normal to feel various sensations as long as they are comfortable.

While they are in, you typically feel a deep sense of relaxation. Many will even fall asleep (even on their first treatment when nerves are high!)

We take care during our sessions to ensure you are comfortable and make sure you feel informed during the entire process.

One of our favorite days to see our patients is on transfer day! It is a big day with so many mixed emotions and we are honored to be a part of it.

We provide day of transfer acupuncture for local and out of town patients.

There is evidence that acupuncture can support key parameters in men as well as women. So much of the focus of infertility rests on women, and the men's side of the equation is often missed.

We recommend acupuncture to all male partners going through fertility treatment regardless of known male factor infertility. Treatment recommendations vary depending on the type of cycle (IUI, IVF, etc), as well as any underlying medication conditions.
