Did you know that acupuncture can help reduce the pain associated with both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis?
These two types of joint pain have different root causes, but research shows that acupuncture can be helpful for both.
Research supports the use of acupuncture for reducing pain and improving mobility in both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
In a 2019 randomized controlled trial, acupuncture was found to reduce pain and improve mobility in osteoarthritis of the knee, together with usual care (biomedicine, typically NSAIDs), compared to usual care alone.
In other words, if you’re managing your knee osteoarthritis with your MD, adding acupuncture can help reduce your pain levels even further.
In addition, a systematic review of osteoarthritis of the knee was carried out with similar results. The study “reported the effectiveness of acupuncture on pain relief and functional recovery in patients with [knee osteoarthritis].”
They also noted that acupuncture had fewer adverse reactions (i.e., side effects) than western medical treatment.
Although a lot of osteoarthritis research has been done specifically on the knee, I also have patients who have found it to be incredibly helpful in managing OA pain in other joints as well.
For example, osteoarthritis of the hip, vertebrae of the neck or low back, and the hand.
In another recent study, researchers found that acupuncture had a positive effect on pain relief, physical function and health-related quality of life outcomes in rheumatoid arthritis patients.
In the KMS (Kiiko Matsumoto style) I practice, I use Diode rings to great effect for arthritis as well as stenosis of the spine.

TODAY Acu Appointment - Last minute Hello! We have a last minute acupuncture appointment available today with Chad TUES 7/27 at 3pm in the Asheville clinic. This is an email to our whole list. We honor first come, first serve.
After a much-needed summer retreat, we’re back in the office starting today, Friday, July 23rd. We look forward to helping you feel better.
How well do you know your acupuncturists credentials?
🎓 Chad Johnson earned a Masters of Science Degree in Acupuncture from Tri-state College of Acupuncture in 2011.
🎓 At Tri-state he studied multiple styles including Acupuncture Physical Medicine (APM) with Dr. Mark Seem, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with Dr. Sharon Zhao, and Five Element and Alchemical Acupuncture with Lorie Dechar. This provided a solid foundation of both organ theory (zang fu) and channel theory (jing luo) – a rare combination of study as most students learn one or the other to start.
🎓 Most notably, he studied extensively under the dynamic guidance of Master Kiiko Matsumoto in Japanese Kiiko Matsumoto Style (KMS) , which features palpation of the abdomen and channels as a powerful diagnostic tool. He continues to study and train with Kiiko Sensei – a living master- in Japan (2016) and in the states multiple times per year.
🎓 Prior to this, Chad graduated from the Central Louisiana School of Therapeutic Massage (2002).
🎓 In the beginning, he started at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine with an AOS in Massage Therapies, studying Chinese Medical Massage, Shiatsu, Thai Yoga Massage, the History of Chinese Medicine, Aromatherapy, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Reflexology, and Alexander Technique. He also studied Yang style Qi Gong and Tui Na (Chinese Medical Massage) under Master Fukui Yang.

Aftercare is just as important as your acupuncture treatment. Chad will discuss what to expect for your unique situation and you’ll understand how to listen more deeply to your body's needs.
Acupuncture and massage facilitate great change in the body. How you proceed from here affects the outcome of your treatment. Here are some important notes on the coming week for you.
Here are few recommendations for your post treatment care:
💙Drink sufficient amounts of water to stay hydrated. Try having two glasses upon awakening in the morning to start. Add lemon water to your first glass to support your liver. This improves digestion and orients you to drink a clean source of water throughout the day.
💙You may notice more range of motion, soreness as if you’ve just worked out, or other body changes. Be very gentle with yourself for a couple of days, then, ease into more activity each day mindful of the changes that are taking place.
💙Don’t overdo it. As your body starts to feel better you may be tempted to finally get out and run, hike, or mow your lawn. Take caution when easing back into any physical activity.
💙Unplug a bit more. Watch less TV and listen to your body. Unplug from computers, wifi, social media and email if possible, even if just for short periods of time.
💙It is helpful to keep a journal during your course of treatment to reflect changes and progress. Track, intensity of pain, frequency, range of motion and other changes that are taking place.
💙Eat nourishing, whole, seasonal foods that are prepared with love.
💙Marvel at your body’s amazing capacity to heal.

🌿Mugwort [ muhg-wurt, -wawrt ] Artemisia Vulgaris, a plant medicine used in both the west and the east. We use a gently cultivated, high-quality form from Japan. In the clinic, we use it to bring warmth into the points and promote the flow of qi.
🔥The healing art of moxibustion is something Chad often adds during treatment. There are many forms of moxa, one of his favorites is called Okyu-do [oak-you-dough]. This is often referred to as thread moxa - highly refined moxa is quickly rolled into rice sized-grains or threads and added to a point. He warms up the moxa on specific acupuncture points that slowly burns. This is a warm therapy called moxibustion. He can do this with thread moxa (okyu-do) or packed tightly on the end of the needle (Kuito Shen) allowing the heat to travel into the body.
Health benefits:
🔥Burning moxa works by stimulating movement in the blood, lymphatic system, and boosts the immune system by strengthening the bodies’ ability to expel pathogens. The quality and level of resilience in our system builds with the support of moxa, therefore we can more easily fight off any cold and flu invasions!

B A L A N C E . ☯️ The relationship between yin and yang is often described in terms of sunlight playing over a mountain and a shaded valley. Yin (literally the 'shady place' or 'north slope') and Yang (the south side of the hill, the sun). Everything is an interplay between yin and yang. There is yin in the yang and yang in the yin. Just look at the ☯️ YinYang symbol and you will see what we mean. Black is yin, white is yang. Yin is water, cool, and descending. Yan is sunlight, warmth, and rising. Think of the qualities of heat and cold. Loud and quiet. Now think of all the subtleties in between and inside. The silent pauses between the noise.
☯️ A cool breeze flowing through a warm day. How does this translate to health? It means we listen to the body and it’s a multitude of nuanced interplay of yin and yang. Is there too much yang where things should be more yin? Are we yin deficient or excess? These are some of the ways we can view and correct imbalance in the body, mind, and spirit. Coming into balance is coming into calm.

Safely traveling this summer but you want to keep up your good eating habits?
🥦Then, here’s a healthy, tasty recipe that will bring you into the summer mode. This is a popular favorite from our Seasonal Cleanse. It’s great food to travel with and requires NO COOKING.
🍋Rejoice, Rawko! It’s like a taco but it’s raw – not raw meat – raw foods (means no cooking, more enzymes, more energy, packed with flavor). We’ll admit, it can be a bit of an odd concept at first but once you try them, you may just be pleasantly surprised.
💚We love this recipe and hope you do too! 👉 https://bit.ly/3j4o8Sn

Do you know the benefits of ear seeds? The ear contains a map of access to all the organs in the body. The use of ear seeds has been used for centuries and is a great way to continue a treatment at home.
Ear seeds are made from tiny beads, mustard seeds or pellets that are placed on specific areas of the ear with an adhesive tape. When you place the seeds on the appropriate parts of the ears, it’s a non-invasive method of stimulating specific aspects of your body system. Worn for 2-5 days at a time, all ear seeds work on the same principle of providing acupressure on specific ear points. During the day, place pressure on the seed(s) amplifying their effects. Proper placement is essential and easily guided. We can help.
Benefits range include:
🔹 chronic pain, especially lower back pain
🔹 insomnia and other sleep issues
🔹 depression
🔹 anxiety
🔹 stress
🔹 infertility

Do you know -- The Many Dimensions of the Kidneys?
The kidney system is one of the most sacred and important of our energetic organ systems.
The kidneys represent the deepest, most fundamental levels of energy in the human body. They are the root of yin and yang in the body – two fundamental forces at play in our physiology. The kidneys also store a substance called “essence” –or Jing– which is essentially our life force, and our reproductive ability. This is the home of the Will. The will to live, to do, to activate.
The kidneys are often referred to in Chinese Medicine as our “root” – as they are the first organs to form. They are tasked with caring for the most precious parts of us that make us who we are. We can support our kidneys and the water element by eating black and purple foods. It is the deepest of the yin. Think deep whales in dark water.
On a physical level, the kidneys govern the water passageways within the body and are the water element. We specialize in the Kidneys, through acupuncture we support patients with Kidney Disease as a means to avoid the need for dialysis.
Over the past year we have all taken a hit on our kidney function and this can lead to adrenal fatigue and other dysfunction. Chad gives a kidney treatment in almost every session to support health and vitality, deep rest and healing for the body.
Fascinating, right? We think so…

Not all of us are the best at breathing for improved wellness. Believe it or not, it takes practice. Yes, breathing is something we all must do to stay alive, but this is the bare minimum. We can utilize oxygen and better breathing for lowering anxiety, better sleep, and nourishing our bodily systems. This is another kind of breathing.
Do you suffer from chronic pain, anxiety, or insomnia? Here are some ways to improve the outcome:
Use the breath to regulate your nervous system. To bring yourself into the parasympathetic state (rest and digest) — if you are having an intense reaction or episode, work with your breath. There is a simple technique that Chad guides people through everyday in the clinics.
Simple Breath Technique:
🔹 Big breath in and exhale forcefully out
🔹 Then take a relaxing breath: breathe into the abdomen – below the diaphragm- do not engage the neck and the upper chest, 60% inhale and 100% exhale long and slow.
🔹 Do three of the calming breaths (add more if you feel). At night Chad does 10 breaths before bed.

Many of us have experienced what it is like to have a physical, painful issue occurring in our bodies yet our doctors and other medical professionals can’t always pinpoint the source of the problem. We begin searching for other means of relief or live with the ailment unnecessarily.
When you feel you have no options left, Acupuncture can offer you a different perspective on your health. Oftentimes this difference equates to a better quality of life for you.
In Chinese medicine, we look at the body through the lens of what is called “Five Phases.” This includes, heart, lungs, spleen, liver, and kidneys. These organs have relationship patterns that we can balance through acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. When these organs become balanced the body can heal itself more efficiently.
In other words, we don’t look at one sick body part, we look at the health of the whole system.

🌳Seasonal allergies –from intense to mild– have a wide spectrum of pathology. Everyone’s breathing in the same air, pollen, dust, etc.
Why do some people suffer from seasonal, outdoor, pollen related allergies while others do not?
From a Chinese Medicine perspective, there is an imbalance in the organs and how they function. Each organ in the body rules different functions of the body. For instance, the liver opens to the eyes and the lungs open to the nose. An itchy throat? That’s the heart’s domain.
During treatment, we evaluate the organs, find the areas of imbalance and determine if they are excess or deficient – whether they need to be dispersed or notified.
Allergies are most effectively treated with a root and branch treatment. Treat the organs first. Then treat the sense organs that are affected – these manifest as the symptoms.
