What a fantastic summer it's been with our Biola Blockbuster: Outdoor Summer Movie Nights! The final event of 2024 was an absolute hit, and we had a blast seeing so many of you there. Alumni snagged some exclusive Biola-branded blankets, and Eddie the Eagle even made a special appearance!

Thank you to all the alumni who joined us for these fun-filled evenings. It was wonderful to see our entire community—staff, faculty, alumni, prospective students, and their families—come together. Looking forward to more great events in the future!

We wanted to share the news of Dr. Ivannia Hinman's recent passing after her courageous battle with cancer. Please take a moment to read a touching tribute from June Hetzel, Dean of the School of Education, who shared a special connection with Dr. Hinman:

Dear Colleagues,

Some of you may have already heard the news of the passing of our incredible former Biola education student, colleague, and friend, Dr. Ivannia Soto-Hinman. Ivannia was a professor here in the School of Education, enjoying her first professorship after she completed her doctorate. She was a Biola SOE graduate student years ago, and I hired her for her first teaching position here at Biola. While at Biola, she also simultaneously completed a post-doc at Stanford. We co-authored her first book with Corwin Press together, and also co-authored an article for an Oxford journal together. When Ivannia left Biola after three years, she went to serve for the balance of her career at Whittier College. Ivannia went on to write a total of 14 books with Corwin ... all to serve English Learners. She was an amazing specialist in the area of bilingual education, a great asset and leader in the field, and she consulted for us at Biola when we wrote our BILA authorization document.

Dr. Lorelei Coddington also had the pleasure of overlapping three years of service with Ivannia at Whittier College, and Dr. Carolina Serna has also worked with Ivannia in CABE and NABE. We will all miss her. You may have noticed in my office ... I have a photo of my hooding Ivannia Soto at her Masters Graduation at Biola. Ivannia has had a long fight with cancer and now is in the presence of our Lord. Yet, even in the last weeks of her life, she was still sending out articles ... one came out last week in the Language Magazine!

The celebration of life for Ivannia will be this Saturday, May 18, 2024 at Whittier College, at 3:00PM in the Ruth B. Shannon Center, 6760 Painter Avenue Whittier, CA 90601. I hope many of you are able to attend as your schedules permit.

I didn't want you all to miss our latest Biola Alumni highlight over on Instagram, Brad Watts! Here's what he had to say:

"My time at Biola was a time of immense spiritual growth, where I came to understand much deeper my identity in Christ, the gospel, what I believe and why I believe it, and how to think biblically in all areas of life. After college I married my best friend I met at my local church in Texas. We both serve in the orchestra at my church, I’ve also been able to serve in areas of evangelism and discipleship which became passions of mine as I was discipled at Biola and was equipped to share my faith in classes like evangelism with Thaddeus Williams.

I now work in the finance industry. I started in collections and customer service, then moved on to be licensed as a stock broker for Charles Schwab, and am currently working towards licenses to become a financial advisor. I see the workplace as an opportunity to work with excellence unto the Lord and stand out and be a light to others. The integration of my faith in the workplace also applies to how I love those I work with and the clients I serve by investing in their lives compassionately and faithfully. On top of that I have seen the importance of being ready in season and out to share the gospel when given the opportunity."
