Linda's Book Club Pick
For our first selection I've chosen "MOCKINGBIRD SUMMER" by Lynda Rutledge. (Author of another all time favorite "West With Giraffes"). It might feel like a bit lighter fare for some groups, but it definitely has issues for discussion; some character driven, as well as some social and racial issues. This coming of age novel takes place in the late 60's, in a small town in Texas. It's a summer during the Civil Rights Movement, segregation, the war in Viet Nam. But for 13 year old Corky Corcoran, it's also the summer she is handed by the librarian her first adult book to read, To Kill A Mockingbird. And it is the summer she befriends a 16 year old girl from the other side of the tracks named America.
