Strange but True!

🦉 It’s amazing what you can find between the pages of old books.
In honor of Memorial Day and the holiday’s roots in the post-Civil War era, here is a poem by an unknown writer which we were fortunate enough to discover. (See transcription in the comments below.)

🦉 This Memorial Day, we Honor all those who have served and Remember those who “gave the last full measure of devotion.”

Memorial Day, now a federal holiday observed on the final Monday of May, used to be known as Decoration Day, and was observed on May 30.

The tradition of gathering in cemeteries to decorate the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags began in the years following the Civil War, with many communities doing so independently of each other.

The first national observation of the holiday took place on May 30, 1868, at Arlington National Cemetery. At the turn of the century, it was designated as Memorial Day. In 1971, federal law changed the observance of the holiday to the last Monday in May and extended the honor to all soldiers who died in American wars. http://go.loc.gov/phSe50OvOIo
