May 29 is National Alligator Day!๐
Here are some fun facts about our reptilian friends who reside in Cypress Lake:
Ancient
Alligators have been around for over 200 million years, making them older than most other animal species and even dinosaurs. American alligators live about 50 years in the wild.
Size
Male alligators can grow up to 15 feet long, while females can grow up to 9 feet. After they are 4 feet long, alligators are safe from predators except humans and occasionally other alligators.
Habitat
Alligators live in freshwater environments like swamps, marshes, wetlands, and ponds. They are great swimmers with webbed feet and strong tails that help them move through the water.
Diet
Alligators are carnivorous opportunists that eat a variety of animals, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. They use their sharp teeth to seize prey, and their strong jaws can crack turtle shells. They swallow small prey whole, but break larger prey into smaller pieces or bite it and spin to tear off pieces. Alligators have also been known to eat fruit like wild grapes, elderberries, and citrus fruits.
Sleep Habits
One interesting aspect of alligator biology is that even though they do not hibernate, they undergo periods of dormancy when the weather becomes cold.
Other traits
Alligators canโt survive in salt water. They tolerate salt water for brief periods but they do not have salt glands. They can run fast but tire quickly, and their eyes glow in the dark. Alligators usually take a breath of air every 20 or 30 minutes. But some can hold their breath for up to 24 hours!
Mating
Alligators are traditionally solitary reptiles, but you might see larger ones in groups during mating season in April, May, and June. To learn more about alligator mating season visit our post about the Alligator Season of Loveโค๏ธโ๐ฅ

Is anyone else counting down the days until your upcoming vaycay? โ๏ธโ๏ธ Before you take off, ULFCU is making sure you make the most of itโฆfinancially! Consider these tips:
๐ธ Decide in advance what youโre willing to spend on and what you arenโt (dining, flight times, location of hotel, souvenirs)
๐ฃ Talk to people who live where youโre going or know a lot about it
โฐ Save your splurges for the last day
๐งฐ Pack properly (No matter where youโre heading, take at least one pair of long jeans, a warm hoodie, and a waterproof jacket for unpredictable weather incidents)
๐ณ Use Secure Payment Methods (cards with chip-and-PIN technology are generally more secure than magnetic stripe cards; consider using mobile payment apps or contactless payment methods to reduce the risk of card skimming or theft)
๐ฑ Monitor Your Accounts Regularly on your app
๐ง Avoid Public Wi-Fi Networks (Hackers can intercept your sensitive information, including passwords and financial details)
Coming Along nicely!
Whether they are in the application stage or already landed the position, ULFCU is sharing some tips to ensure your teen is prepared for their first summer job.
๐ Building their resume: help them expand beyond their job history by focusing on any related coursework, scholastic awards or achievements, extracurricular activities, and volunteer work they are involved in.
๐ Dress the Part: Having appropriate work attire prepared well in advance ensures your teen is dressed for the part for both the interview and their first day.
๐ Transportation: If they drive themselves, make sure they budget both time and money for gas. A great way to eliminate the worry of rushing to fill up before work, or worse, running out of gas on the road, is always to maintain a half-full tank. This simple practice can be a valuable lesson on procrastination and discipline.
๐ฐ Payday: If they donโt have a checking account already, now is the time to start talking to them about setting it up.
A summer job has the potential to provide your teen with more than just a paycheck. It comes with the opportunity to learn some of lifeโs most valuable lessons. โ๏ธ

Roommate groups for First-Time Freshmen will close on May 1, 2024. We will be unable to accommodate any roommate requests after this date.
All students must have a completed housing application to join a roommate group. The group leader will only verify the group after all members of the group have been added. Only verified groups will be able to be seen by our assignments team.
Also, roommate groups made in My College Roomie (MCR) must be entered in the housing application. We cannot honor any roommate groups that are made in MCR only.
Let us know in the comments if you have any questions about roommate groups.
