The Military Student Activities Collection in our University Archives are currently being processed!

The Military Student Activities Collection in our University Archives are currently being processed!

There were 18 scrapbooks found, designed for the Arnold Air Society of USL containing photos and newspaper clippings dating from 1948 to Spring of 1987. Some scrapbooks were even put together using wood for the covers and back. These materials are being taken out of the scrapbooks and organized into folders by organization and year. The reason for this is many of the materials were placed in forms that are harmful to the archival objects and can be damaging, like being placed on construction paper and taped. Some of the pictures are continuously falling out of the scrapbooks because they are not secure and can be lost. The pictures will be place in photo sleeves where they will be secure and protected. The newspaper clippings will be placed in customized folders and the wood covers will also be preserved through phase boxing.

We want to make sure that all our archival materials are in good condition for preservation and viewing to sustain for the future and to clearly represent the history they hold.

The processing of paperwork will be put on hold for a few days while we get the computers up and running and settle into our new space.

On Tuesday, January 23rd, our new home will be on the mezzanine in Agnes Edwards Hall room M-160. We are very excited for all of you to see the new center.

First known as the “Badge for Military Merit," George Washington created the Purple Heart more than 240 years ago, making it the oldest U.S. military award. Today, we honor Purple Heart recipients and their loved ones for their service and sacrifice.

In 2019, VA amended its priority processing categories, giving Purple Heart recipients priority consideration during the claims review process. Purple Heart recipients who submitted initial disability compensation claims on or after April 1, 2019 will be added to nine categories of emergent claims requiring priority processing from the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA).
