Thank you, Entergy! 🤟

A special thank you to Entergy! The UL Lafayette College of Engineering’s National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) chapter has received a $10,000 gift from Entergy. The gift will support national membership dues, conference attendance, and travel and community outreach to local schools for STEM education and mentorship. Additionally, the gift will support a speaker series featuring Entergy experts who will focus on professional growth and technology-related interests. Entergy Louisiana, LLC President and Chief Executive Officer Phillip R. May, Jr., a UL Lafayette alum, said the gift will prepare students to meet the demands of the future.

A very big thank you to ExxonMobil! The University of Louisiana at Lafayette received a $600,000 gift from the global energy company that will fund student scholarships and advance the energy sector in our state.

The investment will enable the University to award two, $50,000 endowed scholarships to first-year students from Vermilion Parish who are pursuing degrees in the College of Engineering and the Ray P. Authement College of Sciences. It will also enhance outreach efforts in the University’s Energy Institute of Louisiana and the Kathleen Babineaux Blanco Public Policy Center. Announced Wednesday, the program aims to answer a critical – and growing – nursing shortage by enabling individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree to pursue a nursing degree in less time.

Ernest J. Gaines to appear on postage stamp that will be issued in January 10/24/2022

Dr. Ernest J. Gaines’ novels earned the writer a National Medal of Arts – the highest award given to artists by the U.S. government – and publication in 19 languages. The latest nod to Gaines’ examinations of race, class and poverty? A U.S. Postal Service stamp that will be issued in January. Gaines, who died in 2019, was writer-in-residence emeritus at the University. We remain grateful, proud and honored. Thank you once again, Dr. Gaines.

Professor of civil engineering Dr. Emad Habib is the 2022 Eminent Faculty Award’s Leadership Service Award honoree. He holds the Theriot Endowed Chair in Civil Engineering in the UL Lafayette College of Engineering.

Dr. Habib directs the University’s Louisiana Watershed Flood Center and is interim director of its Institute for Coastal and Water Research. His research in flood prediction and mitigation, and water and climate sustainability has been widely recognized. Habib is a faculty member well known for his genuine commitment to service and his abilities to integrate service in his teaching and engagement. Together with his students, Dr. Habib has partnered with many community organizations like the Acadiana Planning Commission, One Acadiana, Lafayette Consolidated Government, the Teche-Vermilion Watershed District, and many more to provide valuable services through research.

Professor of communication Dr. Philip Auter is a 2022 Eminent Faculty Award honoree for the Dr. Ray P. Authement Excellence in Teaching Award. He holds the Hubert Bourgeois Endowed Professorship in Communication in the University of Louisiana at Lafayette College of Liberal Arts.

Dr. Auter collaborated with the American University in Cairo, Egypt, on “The Handbook of Research on Communication as an Agent of Change in the Modern Arab World.” Auter is planning a partnership for cross-cultural programming between the universities. He is also past executive director of the American Communication Association.

Associate professor of architecture and design Sarah Young is a 2022 Eminent Faculty Award honoree for the Dr. Ray P. Authement Excellence in Teaching Award. She is a faculty member in the School of Architecture and Design in the UL Lafayette College of the Arts.

Professor Young earned the College of the Arts’ Rising Star Award. Her research interests include design pedagogy and design communications dealing with representation, writing, and storytelling. She also was a member of a team of researchers whose grand prize-winning “Coastal Caretaker” project was featured in an exhibit in Ankara, Turkey.

Professor of psychology Dr. Emily Sandoz is a 2022 Eminent Faculty Award honoree for the Distinguished Professor Award. She holds the Emma Louise LeBlanc Burguieres Board of Regents Professorship in Social Sciences in the University of Louisiana at Lafayette College of Liberal Arts.

Dr. Sandoz directs the University’s Louisiana Contextual Science Research Group, and is graduate coordinator for the Department of Psychology’s master’s degree program. She was recognized as an Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor. She’s also a fellow of the Association for Contextual Behavior Science.

The University is pleased to announce our Eminent Faculty Awards recipients for 2022! These faculty members are recognized by the University of Louisiana Lafayette Foundation for their outstanding efforts in teaching, research, and service-learning outreach. Join us this week as we celebrate each of these deserving faculty with a series of videos highlighting their work and impact.

Today, we’re honoring professor of electrical and computer engineering Dr. Afef Fekih. She is a 2022 Eminent Faculty Award honoree for the Distinguished Professor Award. She also holds the Harold Callais/BORSF Endowed Professorship in Electrical and Computer Engineering and the O’Krepki/BORSF Professorship in Telecommunications in the UL Lafayette College of Engineering.

Dr. Fekih is the director of the University’s Advanced Control Systems Laboratory. Her research interests include control theory and applications, nonlinear and robust control, fault-tolerant control and dynamic system modeling.

Established in 1957, the UL Lafayette Foundation is the central non-profit arm of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. It is an institutionally related public foundation which invests and manages all private assets gifted to the University.

The Foundation manages over 1600 accounts for various University programs, including: scholarships, professorships, chairs, faculty development funds, grants for research, athletics, alumni and University Art Museum funds, fund-raising and development operations and other University-Foundation related programs.
