One of my favorite sports chiropractic memories is covering the NCAA national championships and having the medical staff run in yelling “we need a chiropractor!”. A gymnast had landed wrong during warm ups and needed some help. We got her back up and ready to perform!🤸♀️
Chiropractic can be vital for gymnasts’ performance. Between the landing, falls, repetition, etc.—adjustments are needed!🙌 More importantly: gymnasts rely on their sense of proprioception and vestibular system. This is what helps them stay balanced and know where they are during flips and turns. Shifts in the spinal column can lead to abnormal signals going to the brain and can alter proprioception. Chiropractic adjustments correct that abnormal signal—leading to improved performance and (hopefully) less risk of injury.

Your insurance is not going to cover the rehab you need to fix your chronic musculoskeletal pain.
Very few medical doctors understand human kinesiology, and even if they do: getting insurance to cover physical therapy to the area you really need is tricky.
Take for example. You have pain, see MD, they take X-rays/MRI and you are diagnosed with or . They recommend physical therapy to your low back.
We need to ask WHY the spine has degenerated and the discs are herniated. I can guarantee you the underlying problem is further than the low back, especially in cases of .
The body works as a kinetic chain: every joint is synchronized by the brain and the fascia to coordinate movement in a way that’s optimal to the body. To take on load correctly the foot bones must lock in place together, in order to take pressure off the knee, generate proper movement in the hips and stability in the back and pelvis. On top of that, the feet must connect with the upper neck region properly to tell your brain where you are in space. You also need to have your core sync correctly to stabilize your spine in a way to take pressure off the discs, and your core activation is determined by your diaphragm and pelvic floor.
I’ve seen many patients who failed PT, simply because the physical therapist was restricted to rehabbing the area that hurt: not the area with dysfunctional movement. They get better with me because we corrected the entire kinetic chain, not just the hurting part. Your doctor will have a hard time getting insurance to cover physical therapy to your feet or pelvic floor when your only complaint is low back pain.
Remember: the area you feel pain is usually compensating for the area of dysfunction. (Except in direct trauma.) Invest in your health by picking a doctor or movement specialist who can see the whole picture.

My first introduction to rowing was in college, where my suite mates were the first women on scholarship for Crew at . I had no idea what the sport entailed: the practice, endurance, strength, coordination, and commitment it took to (wo-)man a successful boat. 🚣♀️🚣♀️

Weight lifting is an important part of a healthy body. Building muscle burns more calories, Keeps your bones healthy, and will improve performance in a number of areas.🏋️♀️
In fact: lifting weights has been shown to decrease injury risk in endurance sports.🙌
🔑The key: proper form.
Lifting heavier weights is an excellent way to build strength , and when done in full body moves, like a squat or deadlift, helps you remain functional in everyday life.💪
Just make sure your brain knows where your joints are in space (hint hint: ), you know how to do the lift properly, and know when your muscles are fatigued (it’s not when you can’t lift anymore).

Food for thought: When placed in MRI: 65% of pain free young athletes have rotator cuff tears . 70-80% of pain free individuals have bulging discs in their spine.
Just because it’s on the image, doesn’t mean it’s the source of pain.
Anyone with chronic pain or injuries hope that the MRI/CT/Ultrasound/X-Ray will reveal the cause of their dysfunction.
Imaging alone does not give a diagnosis.
As doctors, we use imaging to help us make a diagnosis. Personally, I use it to help decide what the best option is to treat an individual's symptoms.
Imaging may guide me to a better rehab protocol, a different adjusting style, a more accurately estimated timeline for recovery, or the correct specialist to refer to. Imaging rarely tells me what's wrong, although sometimes it will confirm a diagnosis--like when a fracture walks in the door. Other times, it may backfire: leading a patient to think they have chronic issues or conditions that will keep them in pain forever (which is not true). Doctors have to make sure to use imaging in an appropriate manner.
Remember: You are NOT your diagnosis! The imaging report is only one piece of the diagnostic puzzle and does not define your symptoms. Make sure you are working with a doctor who can explain how imaging, and it's results, fit your individual symptoms.
