Vote (on local nonpartisan issues) like politics doesn't matter.
The May 21 primary election is around the corner.
Tuesday is the deadline to register to vote.
But the truth is, in Oregon, a minority of voters will determine the outcome of most races in this election cycle. That's because the state's two major political parties have closed primaries, meaning only voters registered as members of the parties can vote for Democrats or Republicans in the primary.
Oregon has 3,032,333 registered voters, of which 994,493 are Democrats and 722,216 are Republicans. The largest segment – 1,110,725 voters unaffiliated with a political party – cannot vote in the Republican or Democratic primary. Neither can the more than 200,000 Oregonians who are registered with other parties.

1) Register to vote if you have not already and 2) pay attention to your local news outlets for the latest on what your community is asking you to voice an opinion about. These issues matter, even if they are not associated with party politics. (That might even make them matter more.)

PLEASE READ The May 21st primary is fast approaching. Please be aware that you will not be allowed to vote in many of the state’s most important elections unless you join one of the two private organizations whose nominating elections are run by the state using taxpayer dollars. Oregon is one of only twelve states in which non-affiliated voters are not allowed to vote in any partisan primary.
Due to the political demographics of Oregon’s electoral districts, most races are effectively decided in the closed primary election of the leading party of that district. Of Oregon’s six congressional districts, only one had less than a 10% margin between the two major party candidates in the last presidential election. Until Oregon changes its primary system, your vote is unlikely to matter unless you participate in primary elections. And even if you register with a party, your voting rights will still be restricted to supporting candidates from a single political party. This makes politicians more accountable to their party than to their overall constituency. But until we can change Oregon's closed primary system, the only way to vote in nominating elections is to join a political party.
For the May 21st election, the registration deadline is April 30th.
Automatic registration through the DMV does not make you eligible to vote in partisan primaries. You must register with a party to vote in those critical elections.
If you have an Oregon DMV number, you can update your registration online prior to midnight on April 30th.
Whether or not you have an Oregon DMV number, you can update your registration by mail. Send the Voter Registration Form to your local County Elections Office with postmark on or before April 30th. Voter registration cards are also available.
If you prefer not to permanently affiliate with either major political party, you can change your registration again after the May 21st primary.
If you agree that, regardless of party affiliation, all voters should have an equal vote for any candidate of their choosing, and politicians should be accountable to all their constituents, please volunteer or donate at our website. A $50 state tax credit is available for political contributions - ORS 316.102.
