No more mouth wash!

A recent study found that frequent users of mouthwash (twice daily or more) had a significantly higher risk of developing pre-diabetes or diabetes over a three-year follow-up period compared to less frequent or non-users.

Our mouth is a bustling microcosm, hosting a diverse range of microorganisms that not only aid in digestion, but also impact our overall health. On the contrary, the commercial mouthwashes we use to maintain oral hygiene can disrupt this complex microbiota, rendering a significant blow to these helpful microbes.

The potential mouthwash-diabetes link underscores the importance of maintaining a balanced oral microbiome — reinforcing the interconnection between all parts of our bodies and our health.

No kidding!

When it comes to weight problems, the brain is running the show.

Unfortunately, this fact hasn't been fully recognized, appreciated, or honored in most discussions about weight gain and fatness.

Let me break it down for you.

Your brain is the source of your behaviors related to when you eat, what you eat, how much you eat, the type of movement your body performs, and regulation of body weight, fat composition, and hormones.

Your brain is not always rational in how it tells you to eat, and past stress can make you eat more. Stress is not your brain's friend, and often the parts of your brain wired for survival will guide you to eat calorie-dense foods, even if you're not at risk for food scarcity.

When you gain weight, your brain uses all the tools in its arsenal to make sure your body fat and weight retain the extra pounds. Your brain evolved in a way that it doesn't want you to lose too much fat because you might starve to death. But it can be overprotective and consequently hold on to that belly fat that you are trying to get rid of.
👉Your genes and your body’s feedback signals (stress response, heart rate, metabolism, etc.) have developed such that humans defend weight asymmetrically: we fight against weight loss much more than weight gain. Weight gain doesn’t threaten our ability to survive like weight loss could, so evolution makes it much easier to gain weight than to lose it.

The brain sets a stable body weight for every adult, called the body weight set point, based on genetics, hormones, behavior, and environment.

The set point theory holds that your brain strongly regulates and defends your weight at a predetermined point based on your body's feedback loops. So, when you exercise more, you crave more food, and the scale doesn't budge, and when you eat less, you get hungrier.

The bottom line is that weight problems are complicated, and the brain plays a significant role.

Understanding this can help you make better choices and work towards a healthier weight.

This is a great AT HOME Vaginal Microbiome test kit for those of us ladies who like to be in control of our own health.

Link in bio to see a full sample report from Evvy, or read on to learn what Evvy tests for 👇

In short, Evvy tests for all bacteria and fungi that have been found in the vaginal and urinary microbiomes — with one swab. 🔬

All other vaginal microbiome tests, including those at the doctor's office or available online, use technology (called either PCR or 16s) that screens for a predefined & limited list of microbes.

Evvy's test is the only one to use metagenomics, an advanced form of testing that sequences the whole genome of all microbes present. That means you don’t have to order several tests to get a good picture of what’s up down there — just one. ☝️

👉 Please note that Evvy does not test for STIs and does not replace your Pap smear or regular OB-GYN visits.

This is great advice. Just don’t exceed 1mg per day for long periods of time, or there is a risk of thinning of the retina!

Melatonin is a key healthspan and anti-aging hormone that controls more than five hundred genes.

▪Melatonin is made in the brain.

▪Apart from maintaining the body’s circadian rhythm, it also regulates other hormones and controls the timing and release of female reproductive hormones.

▪Additionally, melatonin may help seal the blood-brain barrier—the key barrier to keep out toxins and other blood components that may disturb the brain—and reduces inflammation. (You find the full list of studies in the Notes for BRAIN BODY DIET)

▪Melatonin lowers estrogen and may prevent breast cancer.

▪Low melatonin has also been linked to a greater risk of endometrial cancer, another estrogen-dependent cancer.

▪Melatonin is at its highest level during sleep.

Are you routinely awake at night with the lights on? If so, your health might be more at risk. Screen time and light at night disrupt melatonin production. The fastest way to throw off your biological clock is to blast your eyeballs with ALAN (artificial light at night). The blue wavelengths of digital screens are fine during the day because they improve your attention, reaction times, and mood, but they turn on you after sundown. Not all colors are the same; the blue light emitted from digital screens, such as smartphones or e-readers, suppresses melatonin production more than other colors of light.

When you’re short on sleep, your sleep/wake cycle is disrupted, taking extra melatonin beyond what your body makes can help you fall asleep faster, increase total sleep time, and improve overall sleep quality.

👉I recommend supplemental melatonin to improve sleep, correct jet lag, help shift workers, repair mitochondria, and improve brain/body function when compromised.
Dose: 0.3 to 3 mg at night.

My melatonin level is low-normal, so periodically, I will perform a melatonin reset by taking a tiny dose of melatonin (0.4 mg) four hours prior to bedtime. After I take this small dose, my melatonin level initially spikes and then starts to decline. My body detects the decline and causes my pineal gland to make more melatonin so that, four hours later, I can sleep more soundly.

Tea Consumption & Mortality 03/16/2023

And this is why I always have a pot of tea going at the office!

Tea Consumption & Mortality A recent prospective cohort study of nearly half a million tea drinkers from the UK found that intake of tea at a level of 2 or more cups per day may be associated with lower mortality risk, regardless of genetic variations in caffeine metabolism. Tea is a very popular beverage worldwide, with black...

Sounds a little like a few people I know (including myself).

Are you nodding your head yes to any of these? The more of these traits that you said yes to, the more likely it is that you are a highly sensitive person.

A highly sensitive person, or HSP, is a characteristic discovered and coined by the well-known psychologist Elaine Aron. This distinct and inborn personality trait is also known as sensory-processing sensitivity, or SPS, and is estimated to be present in about 15-20% of the population.

So what exactly does it mean to be a highly sensitive person?

In simplest terms, HSPs have a greater responsiveness and sensitivity to stimuli. That means as an HSP, you’re significantly more perceptive and reactive to the world – which can be a double-edged sword.

For the pros and cons of a HSP, click here: https://www.jillcarnahan.com/2023/03/01/the-highly-sensitive-person-signs-you-might-be-one/
