Lung Cancer Awareness Month
American Lung Association is uniting people across the country to stand together against lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths in the US. Did you know a warning sign of lung disease is a nagging cough or slight wheeze which may barely get recognized, during our busy day? Many people think lung issues are only from smoking or think having trouble breathing is a part of getting older.
There are many lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis that are life-threatening, genetic conditions presently with no cure. There are about 30,000 people including children with cystic fibrosis in the United States and approximately 70,000 people worldwide. Approximately 1 in 30 Americans are a carrier. Cystic Fibrosis is GFWC Florida Junior Clubs President’s Project.
In the case of occupational lung diseases, these may be avoided with protective measures. For instance, inhaling large amounts of asbestos fibers or dust from asbestos containing products/equipment can cause asbestosis, a type of pulmonary fibrosis which scars lung tissues. There is no cure. Although qualify of life may be managed it is diminished and shortened. Avoiding further injury and exposure is paramount for the victim and their family. This is a disease that may be unknowingly spread to their family by bringing the asbestos fibers home on their contaminated clothes.
Knowing the early warning signs of lung disease can help you receive treatment before the disease becomes serious or even life threatening. If you experience any warning signs, make an appointment with your healthcare provider as soon as possible. Early detection could save your life and perhaps your family. Learn more about lung health, diseases, and symptoms at www.cdc.gov, www.cff.org, www.lung.org.
